Toyota will take a 90 percent stake in the joint venture, called EV Common Architecture Spirit Co Ltd, while Mazda and Denso Corp, Toyota's biggest supplier, will each take 5 percent.

The Volkswagen-owned business last year awarded production of its first mass-produced electric sport-utility vehicle to a plant in Brussels, and has since been pressured by labor unions to allocate electric car projects to Germany.

The first in line for production will be a Mercedes-Benz S-Class rival as it looks to take on the luxury that the sedan offers, while staying a true off-roader at the heart.

Its interesting that the development comes after Musk tweeted about the high import duty and sourcing requirements in June this year and in fact the Government of India responded to that tweet as well.

Renowned electric appliance manufacturer and innovation giant Dyson has officially announced a move into the electric mobility sector by 2020. Although no information on the vehicle exists at this point in terms of which segment it would be placed in, James Dyson has said that it would not be targeted towards the mass market. An investment of £2 billion has also been allocated for the electric car project.

The new electric scooter will be based on the Mahindra Gusto platform and will likely share bodywork, suspension and electricals with the Gusto to keep costs low.

These "mild" hybrids, which add some electric power to existing petrol models without a costly redesign, are now being deployed without fanfare by brands from VW to Volvo. It is diesel's disgrace and decline, executives and analysts say, that has finally set the stage for mass electrification.
