Mercedes-Benz is set to launch the all-electric G-Class, known as the G 580 with EQ Technology, in India on January 9, 2025. This model marks a significant step in the brand's electrification strategy, combining the iconic design of the G-Class with advanced electric mobility.

Design and Features: The G 580 EV retains the classic boxy silhouette of the G-Class, featuring subtle updates such as a closed-off grille and optional illuminated accents. The interior mirrors that of the traditional G-Class, equipped with twin 12.3-inch digital displays and an upgraded voice assistant offering around 20 unique commands specific to the G-Class. Optional features include a rear-seat entertainment package with twin 11.6-inch touchscreens and a Burmester 3D sound system.

Performance and Powertrain: The G 580 EV is powered by a quad-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering a combined output of 579 bhp and 1,164 Nm of torque. This setup enables the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 5 seconds. It is equipped with a 116 kWh under-floor battery pack, offering a claimed range of up to 473 km on a single charge. The vehicle supports up to 200 kW of DC fast charging, allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 32 minutes.

Off-Road Capabilities: Maintaining the G-Class's renowned off-road prowess, the G 580 EV features a torque vectoring system that emulates the performance of locking differentials. The vehicle offers approach and departure angles of 32 degrees and 30.7 degrees, respectively, and can navigate sideward slopes of up to 35 degrees. Additionally, it boasts a fording depth of 850 mm.

Pricing and Availability: While official pricing has yet to be announced, the G 580 EV is expected to be priced above Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom) in India. Bookings are currently open, with deliveries anticipated to commence shortly after the launch.
The G 580 EV's launch underscores Mercedes-Benz's commitment to integrating electric technology into its luxury SUV lineup, offering Indian consumers a blend of iconic design, advanced features, and sustainable performance.
