KTM Announce Electric Motocross Bike E-Mini
Highlights
- KTM motocross bikes are not on sale in India
- The KTM E-Mini may replace the KTM 50SX
- The mini-motocross bike is targeted at younger riders
KTM has announced a small electric off-road bike, called the KTM E-Mini. The E-Mini is expected to be produced from 2019, with sales sometime in 2020. The announcement of the KTM E-Mini comes after KTM introduced the second generation of its popular electric off-road bike, the KTM Freeride E-XC. The E-Mini is expected to replace the KTM 50SX, the model for young motocross riders, which has an internal combustion engine. KTM is reportedly at a very advanced stage of work and testing of the upcoming E-Mini.
Jochi Sauer, KTM product manager has reportedly said that tests on the upcoming E-Mini began almost two years ago, and the son of one of the motocross riders even got a better lap time on the under-development mini electric off-road bike than on the 50SX, achieving a two-second faster motocross lap time. So far, there are no details available on the kind of battery pack or motor being used on the E-Mini.
KTM's electric motocross range is developed under the Freeride E name. The Freeride range is a sort of cross between enduro and trials bikes, and apart from 250 cc, 350 cc and 450 cc internal combustion engines, the Freeride range also includes all-electric models like the KTM Freeride E-XC. The models, Freeride E-SX, Freeride E-XC and the street version Freeride E-SM are only available in Europe. None of these bikes, as well as higher displacement KTM bikes, are available on sale in India at the moment. Bajaj Auto, one of India's largest manufacturer of motorcycles, owns around 48 per cent of KTM.
