Renault and Nissan will build a combined EV line-up of 35 vehicles by 2030, with four-fifths of their models sharing common platforms by 2026.

Three chip firms - Intel Corp's Mobileye, Qualcomm Inc and Nvidia Corp - have emerged from a raft of announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as the leaders in locking down the brains of self-driving cars for the next decade.

Volkswagen said tight chip supply would continue to pose challenges to Europe's largest carmaker during at least the first half of 2022.

The two firms are testing 20 robotaxi vehicles in Shanghai's Jiading district to further gauge their viability for commercial use in a trial that will expand to a second Chinese city next year.

Northvolt will build a lithium processing plant with Portugal's Galp Energia with investments estimated at around 700 million euros ($789.6 million), as demand grows for lithium-ion batteries to power electric vehicles.
