BMW Motorrad showcased the G 310 R and the G 310 GS in India at the 2018 Auto Expo but hasn't launched it. The BMW G 310 R in particular was first showcased in 2015 and was also a part of the BMW line-up at the 2016 Auto Expo. While the bike is manufactured in India at TVS' plant in Hosur and is already on sale internationally, BMW is taking its own sweet time to launch the bike in India. One of the reasons for the delay in launch is that BMW trying to set up its sales and service network in India. The G 310 R is the first ever sub 500 cc BMW bike and is also the most affordable in the German company's two-wheeler line-up. The G 310 GS, is a derivative of the G 310 R and is focussed for touring and mild off-roading.

As is known, the BMW G 310 motorcycles get a 313 cc single-cylinder engine which is liquid-cooled and makes 34 bhp and 28 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. In a first, the cylinder is canted backwards in order to help lowering the centre of gravity and mass-centralisation.
Talking about the styling, the G 310 R is a naked roadster, while the GS is a sporty adventure tourer, with some of its design elements borrowed from its elder sibling, the R 1200 GS. The R and the GS look little different thanks to different body panels, with the GS getting the signature adventure tourer beak-like protrusion up front. The will also have suspension with a longer travel further enabling its touring credentials. The company says that the seating position is also different on the two bikes, with the G 310 R having an aggressive riding position and the GS having a slightly relaxed position.
BMW says that the G 310 R uses over 90 per cent of localised components, which should help keep the prices competitive, competing with the KTM 390 Duke. Expect the G 310 GS to carry a premium of Rs. 30,000 - Rs. 40,000 over the G 310 R. BMW will launch the bikes sometime in the middle of 2018, so yes, there is more waiting to do! Sigh!
