Expert Review on Tata Curvv EV
Pros
- Impressive 585 km claimed range with fast charging support
- Stylish coupe-SUV design with a premium look
- Comfortable ride quality with well-damped suspension
Cons
- Rear visibility is limited due to the thick C-pillar
- Limited cabin space, especially in the rear, compared to competitors
The Tata Curvv EV offers a visually striking design with its sleek coupe-SUV body and delivers on its promise of solid range and comfortable driving dynamics. It stands out in the EV segment for its aggressive pricing and attractive features. However, the limited rear space and some minor tech glitches slightly hinder its overall appeal. Still, the Curvv EV is a strong contender for those looking for a stylish, practical, and affordable electric vehicle in the growing Indian EV market.
The Tata Punch EV represents Tata Motors’ continued foray into the electric vehicle (EV) space, following in the footsteps of the Nexon EV and Tiago EV. Built on the company’s new pure EV platform, Acti.ev, the Punch EV is designed to provide the practicality and ease of a micro-SUV while embracing the benefits of electric mobility. With a strong focus on affordability, versatility, and range, this vehicle aims to be a game-changer in the urban EV segment, offering two range options – 315 km and 421 km. The Punch EV is perfectly positioned for environmentally conscious city dwellers and adventure seekers alike.
The Tata Punch EV takes cues from its ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) sibling, but with distinct electric-specific design elements. At first glance, it’s clear that the Punch EV has drawn inspiration from the updated Nexon EV. The front fascia features connected LED daytime running lights that perform a dynamic welcome and goodbye animation, lending a futuristic feel. Below, LED projector headlamps light the way, while sequential LED turn indicators further enhance its modern aesthetic.
One of the most noticeable changes in the Punch EV is the location of the charging port at the front, covered by a panel with the new Tata logo. While the overall profile remains similar to the petrol-powered Punch, it gets 16-inch alloy wheels with aero inserts for improved efficiency. The rear styling, with its tri-arrow LED tail lamps, shark-fin antenna, and refreshed rear bumper, adds to its sporty appeal.
Dimensionally, the Punch EV has grown slightly. It’s 30 mm longer and 12 mm taller than its ICE counterpart, owing to the integration of the battery pack. The ground clearance of 190 mm ensures the Punch EV maintains its SUV-like stance, despite the extra height caused by the floor-mounted battery.
The Punch EV is available with two battery pack options – Standard (25 kWh) and Long Range (35 kWh). The Standard version is powered by a 60 kW electric motor, generating 80 bhp and 114 Nm of torque, while the Long Range variant boosts performance with 121 bhp and 190 Nm of torque. This combination makes the Punch EV a lively and responsive vehicle, particularly in the Long Range model, which surprises with its quick acceleration and stable high-speed performance.
The car features three driving modes – Eco, Comfort, and Sport – each offering a different balance between performance and range optimization. In Sport mode, the Punch EV feels noticeably more spirited, with reduced regenerative braking, allowing for a more engaging driving experience.
Like other Tata EVs, the Punch EV offers three levels of regenerative braking. At Level 3, the system provides strong regen braking, which enables one-pedal driving for increased efficiency. While it may take some getting used to, this feature is particularly useful for maximizing range in stop-and-go city traffic.
The Punch EV benefits from its slightly raised suspension, which is tuned for comfort. The ride quality is commendable, even over uneven surfaces, thanks to the softer suspension setup. While it may feel a bit bouncy at lower speeds, the suspension truly shines on smoother roads, delivering a plush and composed ride. Tata has managed to retain the solid driving dynamics of the ICE Punch, making the Punch EV a confidence-inspiring vehicle to drive.
Handling is sharp for an SUV of its size. The Punch EV maintains stability, even when cornering at higher speeds, though the electric steering lacks the feel of traditional hydraulic systems. However, the steering provides good heft, making it easy to maneuver in urban settings. Visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent, thanks to the higher seating position typical of SUVs.
The interior of the Tata Punch EV is well thought out and modern, mirroring much of the design language seen in the Nexon EV. The two-spoke steering wheel with the illuminated Tata logo and capacitive buttons provides a sleek, minimalist look. The cabin is spacious for its class, with a layout designed to optimize comfort for both the driver and passengers. Front seats are ventilated and offer adequate support, while the rear bench is flat but comfortable enough for two adults and a child.
The absence of rear AC vents is noticeable, especially in warmer climates, but the electric sunroof and air purifier enhance cabin comfort. The Punch EV also includes convenient features like USB Type A and Type C ports, a wireless phone charger, and a rotary dial for gear selection.
Despite its relatively compact size, the Punch EV offers 366 liters of boot space, which is sufficient for most urban needs. The lack of a spare tire is compensated by the inclusion of a puncture repair kit. Additionally, the Punch EV is the first Tata vehicle to offer a frunk (front trunk), albeit with a modest 5 kg capacity, ideal for storing the portable charger.
Technology is where the Tata Punch EV truly shines. The 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and integrates Tata’s Arcade.ev app store. This system allows access to a variety of apps, including streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, JioSaavn, and YouTube. While the infotainment system is intuitive, some users might find the occasional permission requests for map mirroring a bit intrusive.
The fully digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster displays a wealth of information, from range and battery status to tire pressure and media notifications. Navigation can be mirrored on the cluster for convenience, though some users have reported minor glitches.
In terms of safety, the Punch EV offers six airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Hill Hold Assist as standard. Higher trims also feature a 360-degree camera, blind spot monitor, and electronic parking brake with auto hold, adding an extra layer of security for drivers
Tata Punch EV offers two range options. The Standard variant with a 25 kWh battery delivers an ARAI-certified range of 315 km, while the Long Range variant with a 35 kWh battery can go up to 421 km on a single charge. However, real-world range for the Long Range version is expected to be between 320 to 330 km, depending on driving conditions and usage of regenerative braking.
Both battery packs come with IP67 certification for water and dust resistance, and Tata offers an 8-year/1.6 lakh kilometer warranty on the battery, providing peace of mind to EV buyers.
The Tata Punch EV offers excellent value for money, particularly in the competitive EV space. With a starting price of ₹10.99 lakh (ex-showroom), it undercuts many of its rivals, including the Citroen eC3. The top-spec Long Range model comes in at ₹15.49 lakh, but considering the tech and features on offer, it remains competitively priced. Tata has ensured that the Punch EV caters to a broad range of buyers, from budget-conscious consumers to tech enthusiasts seeking a feature-rich vehicle.
Tata Motors has built a robust network of service centers across India, ensuring that Punch EV owners will have easy access to maintenance and repairs. The 8-year/1.6 lakh kilometer warranty on the battery and the availability of 3.3 kW wall box chargers (with the option for a 7.2 kW fast charger) further enhance the ownership experience. Tata’s reputation for reliable after-sales service in the EV space, especially with the success of the Nexon EV, bodes well for the Punch EV.
In the burgeoning electric vehicle market, the Tata Punch EV faces competition from the Citroen eC3 and its own sibling, the Tata Tiago EV. The Citroen eC3 offers similar range and features but at a slightly higher price point. While the Tata Tiago EV offers a more compact and affordable option, the Punch EV’s SUV-like stance, more premium features, and longer range make it a more appealing choice for those looking for a larger, more versatile vehicle.
The Tata Punch EV is a well-rounded and highly appealing electric vehicle that offers a balance of performance, technology, and comfort. It has successfully carried over the strengths of its ICE sibling while enhancing the driving experience with electric power. While there are some areas for improvement, such as the absence of rear AC vents and occasional infotainment glitches, the Punch EV’s positives far outweigh its shortcomings.
With its modern design, advanced tech features, and competitive pricing, the Tata Punch EV is poised to become a popular choice for urban buyers seeking an affordable and efficient electric SUV. Tata Motors has once again proven that it is at the forefront of the EV revolution in India, and the Punch EV only strengthens that position

Decent Car for an Electric Vehicle
By Mukesh Kalra @ Sep 25, 2024 11:01 AM
4.0
I’ve been using the Tata Curvv EV for a few months now, and while I love the car overall, there are a few areas for improvement. The exterior design is sleek and modern, and the interior space is ample, making it a comfortable ride. The range is decent for an electric vehicle, and the charging time is quite fast. However, I’ve noticed that the boot space is a bit limited, especially when traveling with more luggage. Also, while the engine performance is good for city driving, it lacks the punch I’d like for highway speeds. The fuel efficiency is obviously not an issue here, but I do feel that the maintenance costs for an EV are still a bit high.

Not so impressive
By Ravi Verma @ Sep 24, 2024 01:00 PM
3.0
I expected more from the Tata Curvv EV. While it looks great and offers a decent range, I found the boot space to be quite limited, and the engine performance doesn’t feel strong enough for highway driving. The suspension could be smoother, and the charging infrastructure in my city isn’t the best, making it inconvenient for long trips. I also think the maintenance cost for an EV is still quite high. It’s a good option if you stick to city driving, but not ideal for long distances.
