It's a year of milestones for Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) as the manufacturer sold 4,53,844 lakh two wheelers in July this year, achieving its highest ever monthly sales. In comparison, Honda sold 3,89,555 units during the same period last year, which has helped the company gain a healthy 17 per cent on a year-on-year growth last month, which is almost twice the size of the overall Indian two wheeler market that grew at a pace of 9 per cent. The impressive growth has also shown its effect in Honda's overall market share that has grown by 2 per cent and now stands at 27 per cent for domestic as well as export sales.

HMSI Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Yadvinder Singh Guleria said, "July has been a historic month for Honda 2Wheelers India. The new capacity of our fourth plant has given us wings to not only grow faster than the industry but create 4 records in one month. Crossing the 4.5 lakh unit sales mark in July'16 and growing at 21 per cent nearly double that of the total two wheeler industry in the first 4 months of FY'16-17 gives us more confidence of a bumper festive season ahead."

While motorcycle sales grew by 7%, scooter sales grew by 19%

In domestic sales, HMSI grew by 16 per cent from 3,71,310 units in July 2015 to 4,29,527 units in July 2016. The company has been growing strongly on the success of scooters with the Activa range leading the pack and recorded its highest ever automatic scooter sales last month with 3,09,144 units moved out. Honda's scooter sales increased by 19 per cent, while motorcycle sales were positive as well with 1,20,083 units shipped, a growth of 7 per cent when compared to the 1,12,096 units moved out in July 2015. Honda's domestic market share currently stands at 29.1 per cent, growing by 1 per cent.

As HMSI worked hard to meet the domestic demand, exports have seen a gradual incline as well at HMSI with 24,317 units shipped overseas last month, growing at a pace o 33 per cent. In contrast, the overall export industry has reported a decline of 15 per cent, the company states.

The second half of the year all set to be exciting with a host of launches planned in and around the festive season. The company will be updating most of its existing models to BSIV emission norms, and will also introduce the soon to be mandated auto headlamp on function on its two wheelers. Meanwhile, there will also be updates across its existing range with cosmetic enhancements in place.
