At its core, the R15 V4 is powered by a 155cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine that delivers impressive power and torque. The engine is paired with a slick six-speed gearbox, allowing riders to make the most of its performance potential. The R15 V4 boasts a striking and aerodynamic design, taking design cues from its larger sibling, the Yamaha YZF-R1. Yamaha YZF R15 V4.0 Expert Review
Pros
- Sharp and aggressive styling inspired by the Yamaha YZF-R7, giving it a premium look
- Advanced features like traction control, dual-channel ABS, and upside-down forks enhance riding safety and dynamics
- Lightweight 155 cc engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) offers good performance and a wide powerband
Cons
- High pricing for a 155 cc bike, competing with 250 cc models like the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250
- The committed riding position may be uncomfortable for long-distance rides
- Pillion seat remains high, which could be inconvenient for frequent two-up riding
The Yamaha YZF-R15 V4 remains one of the most dynamically sorted motorcycles in the 150-160 cc segment, offering an impressive package of performance, handling, and premium features. While its relatively high price may deter some buyers, its sharp styling, advanced tech, and engaging ride quality make it worth the investment for sportbike enthusiasts. However, for those seeking long-distance comfort or more engine displacement, there may be better options at a similar price point.
The 2021 Yamaha YZF-R15 V4 brings a significant upgrade to one of India’s most iconic sportbikes. First launched in 2008, the R15 has captivated young riders with its racy looks, committed riding position, and exceptional dynamics. Now in its fourth generation, the R15 V4 offers a more premium experience with fresh styling, better equipment, and new technology. Despite the price hike, the new R15 V4 still manages to deliver an appealing package for riders seeking a sportbike in the 150cc segment.
Inspired by the larger YZF-R7, the R15 V4 features a sharp, aggressive design with a focused front end. The bi-functional LED headlight sits between the new LED DRLs, giving the bike a proper mid-size sportbike look. The gold-finished upside-down forks at the front add a touch of premium appeal, enhancing both aesthetics and handling performance. The floating rear panels, combined with the redesigned windscreen and revised fairing, offer improved aerodynamics
.
The bike’s LCD digital instrument console now comes with Track and Street modes, featuring a lap timer, which gives it a race-oriented feel. The clip-on handlebars have been widened, providing better leverage while maintaining the committed, sporty riding posture. Overall, the R15 V4 stands out as a stylish and aggressive entry-level sportbike that looks and feels premium despite its small engine size.
The 2021 Yamaha YZF-R15 V4 is powered by a 155 cc liquid-cooled, 4-valve engine that delivers 18.1 bhp at 10,000 rpm and 14.2 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm. Although the engine has slightly lower output compared to the previous model, thanks to stricter emission norms, the Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) ensures a wide powerband, offering a smooth and enjoyable performance. The engine is free-revving, and its performance shines as you accelerate through the gears.
The bike comes with a six-speed gearbox and features a slip and assist clutch that ensures effortless gear shifts. The R15 excels at cutting through traffic, offering agile handling while providing enough performance to keep riders engaged. While it may not be the fastest in straight-line acceleration, it remains a fun and involving bike, especially on twisty roads.
The R15 V4 has been designed with a sporty suspension setup. The new upside-down forks provide better stability during braking and cornering, making the bike feel planted in all conditions. The deltabox frame ensures a balanced and stable ride, even when tackling sharp corners or making quick direction changes.
The ride quality is firm, in line with its sporty character, but the bike still manages to soak up minor bumps and road imperfections. The dual-channel ABS works effectively, although the braking system could benefit from more bite. Overall, the bike’s handling characteristics make it a standout in the 150-160cc segment, giving riders confidence both on the track and during everyday rides
While the YZF-R15 V4 delivers on performance, its committed riding position may not be the most comfortable for long-distance rides. The low and crouched seating position is ideal for track use but may cause discomfort during extended trips. The pillion seat is also positioned quite high, making it less practical for frequent two-up riding.
For city commutes and short rides, the riding posture remains manageable, but those planning longer journeys should be prepared for some fatigue. Yamaha could have improved comfort by offering adjustable brake and clutch levers for better ergonomics
Yamaha has equipped the R15 V4 with a host of modern features. The LCD instrument console offers Track and Street modes, allowing riders to switch between different riding displays. The traction control system is a new addition, offering a layer of safety and performance enhancement, especially in slippery conditions
.
The R15 V4 also comes with Bluetooth connectivity, allowing riders to pair their smartphones for additional functionalities, such as notifications and call alerts. However, turn-by-turn navigation is not included, which would have been a valuable addition for touring and commuting
Despite its performance-oriented nature, the R15 V4 is surprisingly fuel-efficient. Riders can expect an average mileage of around 40-45 kmpl, depending on riding conditions. This makes the bike economical for daily use while still providing a thrilling riding experience.
The Yamaha YZF-R15 V4 is priced on the higher side, with ex-showroom prices starting at ₹1.70 lakh for the Metallic Red variant and going up to ₹1.82 lakh for the Monster Yamaha MotoGP Edition. While the price may seem steep, the high-quality package, new features, and performance make it a justified buy. The R15 V4 competes with more powerful bikes like the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250, yet still offers a better value proposition compared to entry-level bikes like the KTM RC 125
Yamaha’s after-sales network is strong in India, ensuring that maintenance and service for the R15 V4 will be hassle-free. The bike is known for its reliability, and Yamaha’s reputation for quality ensures that it will hold up well over long-term ownership.
The Yamaha R15 V4 competes with bikes like the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 and KTM RC 200. While both of these bikes offer higher displacement and power, the R15 V4 stands out with its sharp design, excellent dynamics, and modern features. It may lack the outright power of its competitors, but it offers better handling and a more refined ride, making it a great option for those who value control and agility.
The 2021 Yamaha YZF-R15 V4 is a well-rounded package, offering great looks, modern technology, and a thrilling riding experience. Despite its small engine, it performs like a true sportbike and delivers excellent dynamics. The only downsides are its high price and committed riding position, which may not suit everyone, especially for long rides. Overall, the R15 V4 remains one of the best sportbikes in the 150cc segment and continues to be a favorite among young, performance-focused riders

Yamaha R15 V4.0 is a dream for sports bike lovers. The engine power and torque are perfect for city rides as well as highway runs. The cooling system works well, and the bike never feels overheated. The pillion seat is comfortable enough for short rides, and the engine kill switch is a handy feature. Loving the overall experience!

Powerful Engine but Average Fuel Efficiency becose of sports model The R15 V4.0’s engine is powerful, and the handling is smooth. However, the fuel efficiency is not as good as I expected. The maintenance cost is reasonable, but the bike could benefit from better fuel consumption.

Excellent Fuel Efficiency for a Sports Bike
By Ahmed Saze @ Sep 18, 2024 11:36 AM
4.0
The fuel consumption is quite good for a bike with this much power. The 155cc engine provides enough torque, and the cooling system keeps it running smoothly. The seat height is comfortable, and the low oil indicator is a great feature to have.

Great Performance but Limited Comfort
By Navin @ Oct 01, 2024 12:35 PM
4.0
The engine performance and transmission on the R15 V4.0 are solid, making it a thrilling ride. However, the seat height and pillion seat comfort could be improved. It’s perfect for solo rides but not great for two riders.
