Yamaha Motor India has issued a voluntary recall for the YZF-R3 sports bike in the country over defective components. The Japanese bike maker in a statement said that the certain units of the R3 could have a defect in the clutch plate pressure and oil pump, causing a malfunction. While the company did not provide, the timeline of the defective models manufactured, it did state that a total of 902 bikes have been recalled under Yamaha's factory modification campaign.

Yamaha India's official statement about R3 recall stated that the parent company Yamaha Motor Japan, has determined the defect, which relates to the clutch pressure plate and oil pump assy malfunction exists in few motorcycles falling within certain production numbers. While no safety issues have been reported from anywhere in India, it has still decided to recall all the vehicles falling under the identified production numbers, the company said in a statement.

Yamaha R3 Recall

The Yamaha R3 recall in India is part of the global recall issued earlier this month

The 902 Yamaha R3s recalled as part of the modification campaign will have the defected parts replaced with a modified one. The complete process will be 'Free of cost' and will be conducted at the bike maker's authorized dealers. Yamaha also clarified that the recall has been made as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of customers and not a result of customer complaints. Customers can get in touch with their Yamaha dealer to find out if their R3 is part of the recall list or not.

The India recall falls in-line with the Yamaha's global recall that was issued earlier this month. The Japanese bike maker issued 15,000 motorcycles in its home market Japan, which includes a host of 250-350cc motorcycles including the MT 250, YZF R25, YZF R25A, YZF R3 and the MT 320. Individually, 1458 units of the R3 were affected as part of the recall. The company had described the problem to be with the oil pumps, transmission and brakes.

Given the fact that the India spec Yamaha R3 is imported in India from the plant in Indonesia, a host of components remain the same as the global model. As a result, the recall has affect the R25 as well as the R3 globally, both of which are produced on the same assembly line. A capable offering, the Yamaha YZF-R3 is powered by 321cc twin-cylinder engine that produces 41bhp of power and has been quick to gain popularity globally as an apt sports bike with touring capabilities as well.
