What Does Cubic Capacity Mean?
Highlights
What does CC mean w.r.t. motorbikes
CC is an abbreviation for cubic capacity or cylinder capacity. It refers to the combustion cylinder's cubic centimetre capacity. The purpose of the engine is to provide the power, i.e. the horsepower and the torque to the motorbike. The higher the CC, the larger the cylinder and, as a result, its ability to digest air and fuel. As a result, more fuel is burned per stroke, which results in increased power and torque. The total capacity of the cylinders is referred to as engine capacity.
What is the impact of engine capacity on CC?
Engine capacity is used to calculate the engine outputs like torque, mileage, and power. The larger the engine capacity, the more space is available inside the cylinder. This means a larger volume of air and fuel, resulting in more power output. The amount of power generated is proportional to the amount of fuel used. It's also noteworthy that increased fuel consumption leads to decreased mileage.
The relationship between CC and bike mechanical power
Engine cylinders are divided into two types, wide but short and narrow but deep, also referred to as short strokes and long strokes, respectively. Short stroke engines have pistons with a larger diameter that move faster. They must travel a shorter distance and produce more power at a faster rate. Long-stroke engines have narrow pistons that must travel further while producing more torque than power.
The heat energy generated by the fuel pushes the piston in the engine, which is converted to pressure. As a result, physical strength is gained. This linear motion is converted to rotational motion by the crankshaft, transmitted to the clutch and gearbox and moderated to the rear wheel. This is how a bike moves, and the cylinder's capacity and shape determine it. Generally, a 1500 CC bike will produce more power than a 100 CC bike, but in terms of engine cylinder capacity, a 500 CC short stroke can produce more power than an 800 CC long stroke.
Does higher CC mean better speeds?
CC of the engine plays an important role in determining the factors like horsepower and torque. Thus, a higher CC means better speeds. If you are a sports bike enthusiast, you should prefer higher CC engines. The acceleration and the speed of the motorbike can be greatly enhanced with a higher CC engine. But one thing to keep in mind is that the bigger the engine, the lower the fuel economy. Thus if you care about the mileage, a lower CC engine motorbike might be better for you.
