Volkswagen Polo Based SUV in the Works
Highlights
Confirming all the rumours about Volkswagen working on a new Polo-based SUV, the German carmaker said that it is actually developing such a vehicle to counter Nissan Juke. Speaking to Auto Express, a Volkswagen official said that the new SUV will sit below the Tiguan and will be based on VW's MQB architecture on which several other Volkswagen group cars are being built.
Revealing the company's plans of launching at least one SUV in each segment, Dr Heinz-Jakob Neuser, board member for technical development, VW said, "In the future we will have a minimum of one SUV in each segment - from the top-line SUV (Touareg) to MQB-based models and a number of derivatives including a Golf SUV and a Polo SUV. Core markets for the Polo SUV will be China, South America and Europe."
Just so you know, the company had also showcased the T-ROC concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and the Taigun sub-compact SUV concept at 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show and 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. The company says that these still considering these concepts, though the company hasn't yet finalised if these two will get into production or not.
Since the Polo-based SUV will be a more premium product to rival Honda HR-V and Nissan Juke globally, we think a small SUV like Taigun makes more sense for the Indian market.
