The Tata Nexon EV has been a runaway success in India with over 500 units being sold every month since its launch in the country. In fact, its Korean and Chinese rivals are already planning to foray into the segment with their respective compact EVs given the demand for these models. Then we also know that Tata Motors is planning to launch the Altroz EV in India as well and it is most likely to be the carmaker's next launch in the EV space. Now the new Tata Punch too shares the ALFA architecture with the Altroz and we already know that the platform is ready for EVs. So, the question is, is the Punch ready to make the EV transition?

We asked this question to the management of Tata Motors post the official unveil of the SUV and were told that if there is demand for an EV in this space, then the company will not hesitate to bring out an electric version of the Punch. Having already told you that the ALFA architecture on which the Punch is based is EV ready and we've already seen the Altroz EV being developed on it.

We first saw a prototype version of the Altroz EV at the Geneva Motor Show, in March 2019, and we got to see it again in person at the Auto Expo 2020.

The Tata Nexon EV has been a runaway success for the American carmaker.

While it is too early to comment on the technical specification, Tata has already confirmed that all its future electric vehicles, starting with the Nexon EV, will use the Ziptron powertrain technology. So, the car will come with a Lithium-Ion battery pack which will have IP-67 certification and 8-years warranty. Also, all Ziptron powered EVs will come with a range of above 250 km on a single charge and if the Punch makes this transition, it will benefit from this.

Tata Motors already is betting big on EVs and we've seen that it has launched the most affordable EV - the Tigor EV in the country recently. So if the company decides to undercut the Tigor with another electric car, the Punch could be an ideal candidate.
