Tata Motors had a successful February 2018 with the Auto Expo as well as the sales charts. The car maker registered a 45 per cent growth in passenger vehicles sales last month retailing 17,771 units as opposed to the 12,272 units sold in February 2017. Tata Motors' commercial vehicles too saw an increment in volumes with the company registering a growth of 36 per cent last month. The automaker sold 41,222 CV units in February 2018, against 30,407 units registered during the same month last year. Overall, Tata Motors sold 58,993 units in February 2018 in both commercial and passenger vehicle segments. The company grew by 38 per cent, as opposed to 42,679 units sold during the same month last year.
In the passenger vehicles segment, Tata's new products have been highly appreciated in the market and continue to be strong sellers for the company. Tata announced that the car segment grew by 17 per cent. The segment comprises cars like the Tata Tiago, Tigor, Zest and the likes. Meanwhile, the UV segment grew by a whopping 165 per cent in year-on-year sales. The Tata Nexon has been the turn around product for the manufacturer in the UV segment, along with the Hexa. Between April 2017 to February 2018, Tata sold a total of 167,055 units, growing by 21 per cent, as against 137,718 units sold during the same period last year.
In the commercial vehicle sector, industrial developments, fresh tenders in car carriers, coal movement and the petroleum sector were attributed as growth drivers by the company. An increase in demand from construction, logistics, e-commerce and FMCG applications have also contributed to the retail of CVs. The growth is a promising one, considering the CV industry has been collectively limping back from the slow down witnessed in sales in 2017.
Tata's more popular offerings remained the M&HCV truck segment with a 25 per cent growth over last year with 15,241 units in February 2018. Stringent restrictions on overloading, replacement purchase and increasing infrastructure projects drove the demand for high tonnage trucks and tippers. Meanwhile, the I&LCV truck segment saw a strong growth spurt of 54 per cent with 4810 units sold last month. An increase in demand for container and refrigerated trucks also led to this growth.
The SCV Cargo and pick-up segment sales stood at 16,014 units in February this year, registering a growth of 50 per cent over the same month last year. An increment in buying sentiments with the e-commerce sector and Government/Municipal applications, were seen as the reason behind this growth. The CV passenger carrier segment saw 5157 units being sold, a growth of 16 per cent over last year. Between, April 2017 and February 2018, the CV segment grew by 21 per cent, registering a sale of 350,144 units.
Tata's exports declined by 3 per cent at 4768 units.
