After Ashok Leyland announcing that it will make use of Intelligent Exhaust Gas Recirculation technology, Tata Motors has also geared up to use Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in its range of commercial vehicles. The small-to-medium CV range with an engine output of up to 180 bhp, adopted the use of EGR way back in 2010. Tata Motors also started using the SCR technology in its emission systems for medium and heavy CV range from 2014. The engines in question have been developed by Tata Cummins Ltd, which is a joint venture between Tata Motors and Cummins Inc. of USA.

Tata says that EGR helps in reducing nitrous oxide emissions while SCR enables the engine to operate at a more optimal combustion temperature thereby offering better power, efficiency and lower particulate matter generation.

Ravindra Pisharody, executive director, Commercial Vehicles, Tata Motors said, "Tata Motors has led technology changes in the Indian commercial vehicle industry over the last six decades. We have always endeavoured to develop products and introduce future technologies, ahead of regulations and have played a proactive role in regulation compliance. Tata Motors continues to be at the forefront of meeting emission regulation, driven by our concern on environment and health impact. Introduction and adoption of EGR and SCR technology in 2010 and 2014 respectively reiterates our capabilities with regard to introducing future technologies."

Currently, Tata Motors is the largest CV manufacturer in India and has been exporting its products to countries such as Russia, Australia and even in Europe. These markets already have Euro V emission norms in practice.
