Highlights

After a torrid 2014, the Indian automotive industry has witnessed a substantial jump in sales during this festive season with October witnessing a 13.91 per cent growth in overall vehicle sales in contrast to the number of vehicles sold in the same month, last year. According to data released by the Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers (SIAM), all segments including commercial vehicles and two-wheelers have performed positively with October being the twelfth month to see consecutive growth.

While the overall two-wheeler segment saw a surge in sales of 13.3 per cent, the scooter segment saw a mammoth growth of 36.8 per cent. Other top performers include the passenger car and utility vehicle segments which grew by 21.8 and 20.8 per cent respectively.

Vishnu Mathur, Director General of Siam, stated, "The festival season has brought cheer to the auto industry as sales have risen across categories in the last month." He also mentioned that the 13.3 per cent growth in two-wheeler sales points towards a revival in the aforementioned segment, particularly in rural areas. The currently generated momentum in sales is expected to continue over the next few months.

Among manufacturers, Honda topped the charts with a near 90 per cent increase in sales this October thanks to the re-launch of the Honda Jazz hatchback and the addition of diesel engine variants within its fleet. Korean carmaker Hyundai also posted gains with a 23.69 per cent increase in passenger vehicle sales thanks to the recent launch of its compact SUV, Hyundai Creta.
