Next Generation Toyota Camry Sedan Caught Testing
Highlights
- The next-gen Camry is built on Toyota's new TNGA modular platform
- The new Camry is expected to have better dynamics and a lighter body
- The car will see some major changes in terms of design and styling
The next generation Toyota Camry sedan was recently spotted undergoing testing in Michigan, US. The new spy photos show the car heavily camouflaged, covering any part of the vehicle that could hint on what has changed from the current generation model. Expected to go on sale in 2017, the new generation Camry sedan will be based on the company's new 'Toyota New Global Architecture' (TNGA) modular platform that also underpins the new-gen Toyota Prius.

Now, with the new architecture we could expect to see some positive changes in the dynamics of the car and some weight reduction as well courtesy of increased aluminium parts in the car. We say this mainly considering how Toyota has managed to tidy up the new Prius. The new platform also indicates that we'll see some considerable changes made to the dimensions of the car, which is a bit visible in the test mule that appears to have a shorted rear profile. But overall judging from the silhouette of the car we can say that the next-gen Toyota Camry does look proportionate.
In terms of design and styling, as you can see from the level of camouflaged, there is hardly anything we can comment about right now. In fact the disguise does a very well job of covering the character lines and most of the car's exterior features. Having said that, the front section of the car seems to take cues from the current model's pointed shape and the Toyota embalm also appears to have gotten bigger. The revised proportions of the car are also visible from the side profile with the higher roofline and as mentioned before, the shorter rear profile.
As for powertrain option, it is too soon to tell whether we'll see any new engine joint the current list, but it is said that the existing 3.5-litre V6 engine offered in the global markets will be replaced by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder motor. This will be accompanied by a slightly tuned version of the 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine the does duty in the base variant, which is currently offered in India. Of course, the new Toyota Camry will come in a hybrid guise as well.
