Highlights

  • Alloy wheels come in two variants and two types
  • Spoked wheels are best for off-roading
  • Alloy wheels are best for tarmac

Motorcycles always came with wire-spoked wheels all the way up till the 1960s. Not until the 1970s did the one-piece styled alloy wheels come into play, although since then even today most motorcycles come with mag wheels. They are called so due to them being made out of cast magnesium and aluminum alloy. Even though these alloy wheels are the latest and most advanced type of motorcycle wheels, some manufacturers still equip their motorcycles with wire-spoked wheels.

The Construction

Alloy wheels come in two different variants. The more affordable one is the aluminum alloy wheels. The magnesium alloy wheels differ as they are much lighter and fairly more expensive, although the aluminum alloy wheels tend to be much more durable and in turn, last longer. Magnesium wheels do offer better mileage though. There are different types of alloy wheels as well, the two types include cast alloys and forged alloys. Cast alloys are made by the process of pouring molten aluminum into a prefabricated cast and later shaped. Forged wheels, however, are made out of a single piece of metal and go through various different processes of heating and pressure changes, in turn being a lot stronger. Forged alloy wheels are usually used in high-performance racing motorcycles.

Spoked wheels are a lot heavier when compared to alloys, they are made out of steel and are manufactured by connecting steel spokes to the outer rim of the wheel. The manufacturing process of these wheels does however require human labor.

Although some motorcycles may perform or feel better with spoke wheels, when looking at performance on tarmac alloy wheels have a lot of benefits. Keeping the less flex of the wheel in mind, the alloy wheels tend to aid in high-speed cornering due to the high levels of rigidity. Off-road, however, spoke wheels are the better option as the softness means less stiffness and this, in turn, makes it more durable in off-road conditions. Motorcycle types like ADVs, dirt bikes and scramblers all tend to go for a spoke wheels setup. Spoke wheels tend to be easily fixed whether it be a dent or replacing a wire. Alloys on the other hand are the type of wheels that need to be replaced altogether in case they are damaged.
