Mobile Phone Detection Cameras- What are they?
Highlights
Driving can be a tough task if the driver does not pay attention to the surroundings. People are not independent while traveling outside as there are numerous other cars on the road that determine the driving experience for a particular driver. Any lack of attention from one person can be deadly for the people around. This is why distractions like mobile phone usage must be avoided while driving, but people often neglect these warnings. That is why installing systems that can detect such violations from drivers is necessary.
What are mobile phone detection cameras?
The function of this system is exactly what the name suggests. The system takes a picture of the front cabin of the car in high resolution – checking if the driver is using a mobile phone while driving.
Locations
The known locations where mobile phone detection cameras are installed are usually busy traffic junctions.
How to mobile phone detection camera work?
- A single mobile phone detection system consists of a large number of cameras. Infra-red flash is incorporated in the system, which can take high-resolution pictures. The cameras can work during the night and the day as well. In addition, these cameras work in any weather and up to speeds of 300km/hr.
- The pictures are analyzed using various algorithms and with the help of artificial intelligence. One of the first checks is whether both hands are on the steering wheel.
- The pictures which do not show any offense are discarded. These pictures are deleted within one hour.
- Trained professionals are assigned to thoroughly go through these pictures. The assigned officials verify the pictures that contain mobile phone-based offenses.
- There are two versions of these cameras – fixed and transportable. Both of these versions use the same technology for operation.
Penalty for offense
The fine charged for such offenses can vary according to the state in which the rule has been broken. Along with monetary penalty, driving license suspension is also possible in some instances.
Why was this operation necessary?
If statistics regarding incidents are pulled worldwide, we get a clearer idea of why this idea had to be implemented. For example, 1 out of 4 accidents in the United States occurs due to using mobile phones during driving. The number of people suffering from accidents and mobile phone use-related injuries has been increasing over the years.
Driving is a complex activity that requires attention, excellent reflexes, and coordination. Any distraction can lead to a tragedy for the driver and the people in and around the vehicle. These systems make people aware of their actions and punish them for knowingly putting others in danger. These fines are a means of stopping these incidents from happening.
