Hyundai has confirmed plans of making an affordable electric car. The South Korean automaker already makes a bunch of EVs under its main brand and subsidiaries like Kia and Genesis. But now, it is talking about making a mass market electric power based product that will be costing less than $20,000 and will be aimed at the European market.

“Everybody in the industry knows the target of this kind of vehicle is 20,000 euros,” Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Hyundai’s marketing chief for Europe.

Earlier Volkswagen has said that it would bring one of its ID.Life concept cars to the continent and that would cost around $25,000. But considering the dollar has inflated in recent months and is almost of the same value as the Euro. That value would now around about the same as $20,000 and would be in line with its main rival in the market.

What Hofmann eluded too was a potential Hyundai i10 electric model. The i10 is entry level hatchback which is not only sold in Europe but is also sold in India and Latin America.

Hyundai is already going to be manufacturing the IONIQ 5 EV in India and has plans of bringing more affordable models in the market. This electric i10 would work wonderfully well in India and similarly would be quite logical for the Latin American market.

As small cars like the i10 aren’t popular in markets like the US, it would make sense to not sell the product in the continent. This would also help Hyundai counter aggressive emissions related regulations as it starts to sell more cars based on clean energy.
