  • From a safety perspective
  • Making sure that the engine is cool is a priority.
  • The dipstick should be used to get the correct level.

While it may appear difficult, it is a simple task that does not require the use of any tools.

How to Check the Engine Oil Level

Get out your owner's manual and seek instructions on how to check your car's engine oil. Because of the discrepancy in this fundamental process, some new automobiles do not even include dipsticks, while others require the engine to be hot and running while checking the oil level. It depends on the brand and the instructions in the owner's manual.

Most autos, on the other hand, provide a very simple and quick way to check the engine oil level.

Let your engine cool down

If the engine is hot, do not check the oil level. Allow at least 10 minutes for all the oil from the engine's various parts to collect in the lower oil pan. This also contributes to lowering the temperature of the oil. However, it is best to read the owner's manual in this regard. There are certain manufacturers who do not recommend checking the engine oil level when the engine is cool.

Place the car on a flat surface

Ensure that the vehicle is positioned on flat ground. Make sure that the car is not on a sloping surface. If the car is on a sloping surface, the tilt of the engine can give you a false reading.

Take the yellow dipstick out of the engine compartment.

Open the hood and check for the yellow dipstick cover, which is usually placed in the engine compartment's centre. Take the dipstick out and clean it with a cloth. Check that the fabric is not filthy or contains any moisture or dirt, as they are harmful to the engine's internals.

Replace it and remove it again to look for an oil mark.

Replace the dipstick completely after wiping it clean. Wait a second before pulling it out. Check the readings on the dipstick to check the level of engine oil. The readings on the dipstick are from 0 to their maximum value. If the engine oil reading is low, you should replenish the engine oil.

Replace the engine oil and go through the process again.

To replenish the engine oil, use the oil filler cap to ensure you top up the oil properly. When topping up the oil, take care not to spill it on other engine components. Allow a few seconds between checking the oil level and checking it again, as oil, due to its high viscosity, requires time to settle.

It only takes a minute or two to check the engine oil level once every few weeks or before a long trip. This proactive strategy, on the other hand, can save you from catastrophic engine damage, which can result in hefty maintenance costs.
