BMW X1: car&bike Expert Take

The BMW X1 no longer feels like the “entry-level” BMW you settle for. It feels like the one you proudly choose. The moment you see it, you notice the size, the stance, the confidence. On the road between Mumbai and the Konkan stretch, it didn’t feel like a small luxury SUV. It felt planted, grown-up, and sure of itself. The cabin feels richer, the tech feels smarter, and the drive feels more serious than before.
As Shams Raza Naqvi puts it, “The new X1 is a new generation model in the true sense — everything from design and dimensions to features and drivability has changed.”

Shams Raza Naqvi brings over 16 years of experience reviewing automobiles across India, with more than 300,000 kilometres tested across everything from hatchbacks to flagship luxury SUVs.

For this drive, he put the BMW X1 through real-world conditions — tight Mumbai traffic, fast runs on the Mumbai–Goa highway, and winding Konkan roads. He drove both petrol and diesel versions, spending more time with the diesel to assess its torque and everyday usability.

This was a proper mixed-terrain evaluation to see if the X1 truly feels like a grown-up BMW.

The BMW X1 2023 marks a major turning point. Now in its third generation globally, the BMW X1 has grown significantly in size and capability. The transformation is dramatic. At first glance, you might even mistake it for an X3 — that’s how much it has grown in presence and proportion.
This shift isn’t only about size. Yes, it’s longer, wider, and taller, now closer to X3 dimensions. But more importantly, it feels more confident and complete. It still sits below the X3 in BMW’s portfolio, yet it no longer carries that “entry-level” compromise.
Globally, the BMW X1 has been one of the brand’s strongest sellers, and in India it continues to build a loyal base. Unlike many rivals, it still offers a diesel engine — a rarity in this segment.
Watch: 2023 BMW X1 Review

BMW X1 Base Model (X Line)

The BMW X1 base model, the X Line, feels elegant and well-balanced. It offers both petrol and diesel options, giving you flexibility many rivals lack. Riding on 18-inch alloys, it suits its larger proportions perfectly. The design is clean and mature — premium without trying too hard to look sporty.
On the road, the X Line feels smooth and refined. It’s an SUV you’ll enjoy driving daily in the city. It carries its bigger stance confidently while keeping things understated. If you prefer subtle luxury with BMW DNA intact, this trim feels complete.

BMW X1 Top Model (M Sport)

The BMW X1 top model, the M Sport, is where the character sharpens. This version adds attitude with darker accents and sportier detailing that make it look more aggressive. Behind the wheel, paddle shifters and the Sport Boost mode make the SUV feel quicker and more responsive.
Inside, the experience steps up with massage seats and a Harman Kardon sound system. It feels richer and more driver-focused. If the X Line represents calm confidence, the M Sport brings that confidence with a clear, energetic edge.

The moment you see the BMW X1, you realise this is not the small SUV it once was. It has presence now. Real presence.

Front

Up front, the squared kidney grille immediately grabs attention. It’s bold but not overdone. It sits perfectly in proportion with the larger body. The adaptive LED headlamps come as standard, and they give the face a sharp, modern look. At night, the light signature feels premium and confident.
If you choose the M Sport, the gloss black accents around the grille and bumpers add a sportier edge. It looks more aggressive without looking loud. You can tell BMW wanted this car to feel grown-up.

Side

Move to the side and you notice how much the dimensions have increased. The stance is wider, taller, and more muscular. The 18-inch wheels fill the arches well and give it a planted look. Strong shoulder lines run cleanly from front to rear, making the body look tight and athletic.
It genuinely feels closer to an X3 now. In fact, “From a distance, you could mistake it for an X3.”

Rear

At the back, the sporty spoiler and subtle skid plate add character. The LED tail lamps are standard and look sleek and sharp. The design is simple but confident.
Overall, the new BMW X1 doesn’t just look updated. It looks upgraded.

Step inside the BMW X1 and you instantly sense how much it has matured. The cabin feels clean, modern, and easy to understand. The BMW Curved Display stretches across the dashboard and lifts the premium appeal without feeling overwhelming. You sit slightly high, visibility is excellent, and there’s a genuine sense of space around you.

Key highlights include:

  • BMW Curved Display with digital cluster
  • Wireless charger neatly integrated
  • Massage seats in M Sport
  • Large panoramic sunroof
  • 476-litre boot space
  • Sliding second row (M Sport)

The wireless charger holds your phone securely, even on uneven roads. The massage seats feel like a small luxury bonus on long drives. The panoramic sunroof brightens the cabin, and the 476-litre boot handles weekend luggage easily.

Rear space offers good headroom and legroom, though the transmission tunnel affects middle-seat comfort. As Shams Raza Naqvi says, “At first glance, this looks like a very ergonomic cabin with a lot of storage space.” It’s premium without complexity.

The moment you get behind the wheel of the BMW X1, the high seating position stands out. You sit upright, see the road clearly, and feel in control. Whether in busy Mumbai traffic or on open Konkan highways, that visibility adds confidence. Despite its larger size, the X1 feels easy to place and manoeuvre.
Key highlights include:

  • High, commanding seating position
  • Seven-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox
  • Comfort and Sport drive modes
  • Sport Boost (M Sport variant)
  • Paddle shifters for manual control
  • ADAS and parking assistance features

In Comfort mode, the gearbox feels smooth and relaxed. Switch to Sport, and the responses sharpen instantly. On winding roads, the car feels engaging. As Shams Raza Naqvi says, “The steering provides good feedback, and you enjoy playing with it on winding roads.” The ADAS suite and parking assistant add support without distraction.
Technology supports you. It never overwhelms you. And most importantly, it still feels like a BMW.

The BMW X1 comes with two engine options a 2.0-litre diesel and a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol. If you enjoy strong mid-range performance, the diesel is the clear choice. Peak torque arrives from around 1500rpm, giving the diesel strong mid-range performance. In city traffic, you barely need to press the accelerator, while highway overtakes feel smooth and confident.
Key highlights include:

  • 2.0-litre diesel with strong torque
  • Peak torque at ~1500rpm
  • 0–100 kmph in under nine seconds
  • 1.5-litre petrol for city comfort
  • Smooth refinement at cruising speeds

The diesel feels refined at cruising speeds, though you’ll notice a mild growl under hard acceleration. The petrol, on the other hand, feels smooth and easy in urban conditions but slightly less punchy. If most of your driving is city-focused and relaxed, the petrol works well. For stronger highway performance, the diesel stands out clearly.

Here’s a quick look at the performance figures:

EnginePowerTorque0–100 kmph
2.0-litre148 bhp360 Nm8.9 seconds
1.5-litre134 bhp230 Nm9.2 seconds
Source: car&bike

The real highlight here is clear — in a segment where diesel options are disappearing, the BMW X1 still gives you that strong, torque-rich experience. And that makes a real difference.

Limitations

  • Diesel slightly noisy under hard acceleration
  • Petrol lacks strong mid-range punch

Watch: How fast does the new BMW iX1 LWB go from 0 to 100kmph?

Fuel efficiency may not be the first reason you look at a luxury SUV, but it still matters  especially if you drive long distances. The good news is that the X1 diesel surprises you in a positive way. The ARAI-claimed figure is around 20.37 kmpl for diesel variant, which is impressive for a premium SUV in this segment. That strong torque at low rpm also helps you drive more efficiently without pushing the engine too hard.
In real-world conditions, especially during mixed driving between Mumbai city traffic and highway stretches, you can realistically expect slightly lower but still respectable numbers. The petrol version has a claimed figure of around 16.35 kmpl. It feels smoother in the city, but it won’t match the diesel’s highway efficiency.
Here’s what you can expect practically:

Highway

So yes, you get luxury but you also get sensible efficiency. That balance makes the BMW X1 feel smart, not just premium.

The BMW X1 may have grown in size, but it still drives like a true BMW. The suspension is slightly firm, and you will notice sharper bumps at low speeds in city traffic. However, that firmness brings control and confidence. On highways, the car feels planted and stable, even at higher speeds.
Key highlights include:

  • Slightly firm suspension
  • Stable at high speeds
  • Distinct drive modes
  • Minimal body roll
  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) support

Drive modes make a clear difference. Comfort mode keeps things relaxed, while Sport mode sharpens steering and throttle response. On winding roads, the X1 feels balanced and predictable, with clear feedback from the steering. Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control work quietly in the background.
Comfort has improved over the first generation, but the sharp, engaging handling remains. The BMW DNA is intact — and that’s exactly what matters.

When you drive a premium SUV like the BMW X1, you expect protection without drama — and that’s exactly what you get. The structure feels solid, the doors shut with reassuring weight, and at highway speeds the SUV feels stable and composed. Whether you’re navigating tight Mumbai lanes or cruising on open highways, that sense of confidence makes a real difference.
Here’s what supports that assurance:

  • Six airbags
  • Lane departure warning
  • Dynamic cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Pedestrian protection
  • ISOFIX child seat mounts
  • Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
  • Parking assistant with reversing assistant

The driver assistance systems operate smoothly in the background. Lane departure warning gently corrects minor drifts, while dynamic cruise control reduces fatigue on long drives. Parking assistance proves especially useful in tight city spaces.
Despite the fact that the X1 has not been rated below Bharat NCAP yet, BMW vehicles have traditionally scored well in international safety tests. All in all, the X1 is a well-rounded safety package with good engineering and intelligent technology.

Owning a BMW still carries weight. When you park the BMW X1 outside your office or home, it makes a quiet yet confident statement. It tells people you prefer a premium badge, not just a feature-loaded SUV. What makes the X1 especially appealing is that it is an accessible BMW — delivering the brand’s identity without pushing you toward larger, more expensive.

Here’s where it strengthens its case:

  • Strong BMW badge value
  • Rare diesel option in segment
  • Healthy resale potential
  • Suits urban luxury lifestyle
  • Competitive pricing versus rivals
  • Structured service packages

The diesel advantage is significant. With many rivals moving to petrol-only setups, the X1 stands out for torque-rich performance and better highway efficiency. BMW’s service plans also make ownership more predictable. The X1 feels like a smart entry into the brand premium, yet within reach.

When you look at the BMW X1’s pricing, it feels thoughtfully placed. It sits in that sweet spot where you get the BMW badge, strong performance, and premium features — without stepping into full mid-size SUV pricing. And what is even more attractive is flexibility in engine options. The petrol engine is available in both trims, while the diesel is offered only in the sportier M Sport variant.
Here’s how the line-up stands:

VariantEngineCharacterEx-Showroom Price*
sDrive18i M Sport1.5-litre PetrolElegant and UrbanRs 55.5 lakh (approx.)
sDrive18i xLine1.5-litre PetrolSporty and Feature-RichRs 75.13 lakh (approx.)
sDrive18d M Sport2.0-litre DieselTorque-Strong PerformerRs 56.55 lakh (approx.)
Source: car&bike

Prices are indicative and may vary by city.

If you want refinement for daily city drives, the petrol works well. But if you prefer strong torque and better highway efficiency, the diesel in the M Sport makes a strong case.

Against its rivals, the BMW X1 feels competitively priced for what it offers size, brand value, diesel advantage, and strong driving character. It doesn’t feel overpriced. It feels justified.

The premium compact SUV space is crowded, and every rival brings something unique. But when you look at the full picture size, driving feel, diesel option, pricing, and brand value the BMW X1 feels the most balanced. It doesn’t chase extremes. It delivers consistency.
Here’s how it compares:

Watch: Volvo XC40 vs BMW X1 vs Audi Q3 vs Mercedes-Benz GLA

Some rivals offer more power on paper. Some focus heavily on comfort or safety. But the BMW X1 blends driving engagement, efficiency, space, and brand value better than most.

As Shams Raza Naqvi rightly says, It comes across as a worthy option in this competitive segment.

And honestly, that’s what makes it stand out — it feels like the best all-rounder.

Pros

  • Feels larger than segment
  • Strong diesel torque advantage
  • Engaging BMW steering feel
  • Premium curved display setup
  • Competitive luxury pricing

Cons

  • Slightly firm ride quality
  • Rear middle seat compromised
  • Diesel only in top trim
  • Petrol lacks strong punch

Verdict

The BMW X1 is no longer the “starter BMW” you buy just to enter the brand. It feels confident, bigger, and far more complete than before. From its stronger road presence to its punchy diesel engine and engaging steering, it finally carries the weight of the badge properly. Yes, the ride is slightly firm, and the rear middle seat isn’t perfect. But if you enjoy driving and want a premium SUV that feels mature without becoming boring, the X1 makes a strong case. It balances luxury, performance, and everyday usability in a way that feels smart and modern.

As Shams Raza Naqvi puts it, The new X1 has adapted well to today’s times.

And that’s exactly it — the BMW X1 has finally grown into its badge.

Best For

  • Urban premium SUV buyers
  • Diesel-loving luxury drivers
  • Young executives upgrading
  • Drivers who enjoy steering feel

Not Ideal For

  • Soft suspension seekers
  • Budget-focused buyers
  • Rear seat priority users
  • Flashy luxury hunters

Very good vehicle. Good mileage, excellent power and delivery, costly to maintain. BUTTTTTT....... Everything is overshadowed by BAAAAD RFT Tyres. Already had 3 incidents including, 1 replacement of tyre, and not completed 25000 km. DONE ONLY HIGHWAY DRIVING. Now am afraid to take the vehicle on long distance drives. Very disappointing. The RFT Tyres seem to be a drastically wrong choice for India, with it's heat. Makes the car UNSAFE and no peace of mind. Always drive with the TPM display in front of you. Maybe the car is meant only for city drives.

I bought BMW X1 in 2016, used only for office commuting, still the sunroof starting rattling after one year. When this was brought to notice of dealer, he said it is a big sunroof and nothing can be done for it. Battery conked off with 3 years of use. Sunroof shade starting sagging after 3.5 years, need replacement. The rubber mat in the glove compartment has curled. the NVM of the car leaves much to be desired. I think BMW has made a cheap car with poor quality control, especially for India to get more customers. I will advise anyone going for X1 to check for its build quality.
