Bajaj Pulsar NS400 Expert Review
Pros
- Competitive pricing at Rs 1.85 lakh, making it the most affordable 400cc motorcycle in its segment
- Impressive performance with a 373cc engine producing 39.4 bhp and 35 Nm of torque
- Lighter than the Dominar 400 by 18 kg, enhancing acceleration and handling
Cons
- Design closely resembles the NS200, lacking uniqueness for a flagship model
- Tyres could be better for improved grip and braking performance
- Slight vibrations at lower and higher rpm ranges
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z offers exceptional value for money, packing solid performance and a host of features at a competitive price. While it could benefit from a more distinctive design and better tyres, its power, agility, and affordability make it a strong contender in the 400cc segment. With its potent engine and accessible price, the NS400Z is an appealing option for riders seeking performance on a budget.
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is Bajaj Auto’s newest flagship offering in the Pulsar lineup. Positioned as an affordable entry into the 400cc segment, the NS400Z combines aggressive styling with performance. Powered by the 373 cc engine from the Dominar 400, the NS400Z offers a thrilling riding experience while being priced at a highly competitive ₹1.85 lakh (ex-showroom). With the NS400Z, Bajaj aims to deliver a motorcycle that offers a "bang for the buck" experience in terms of power, features, and value.
At first glance, the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is reminiscent of its smaller sibling, the NS200. Both motorcycles share a similar streetfighter stance with minimal body panels, aggressive lines, and a muscular fuel tank. However, Bajaj has made subtle tweaks to differentiate the NS400Z. The Z-shaped LED DRLs, more pronounced tank extensions, and sleek rear tail section give it a slightly bulkier and more muscular appearance.
The motorcycle is fitted with a LED projector headlamp that provides excellent illumination, improving both night-time visibility and safety. The full-LED lighting system (including tail lamps and turn signals) gives it a modern touch, while the USB-A charging port and hazard switch add to the bike’s convenience. The digital display, though functional and easy to read, could have benefited from a more polished design.
Despite the design similarities to the NS200, the overall fit and finish of the NS400Z are commendable, and the bike’s sporty graphics and contrasting color schemes further highlight its streetfighter character
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is powered by the 373.27 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 4-valve engine, borrowed from the Dominar 400. This engine produces 39.4 bhp at 8800 rpm and 35 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm, ensuring strong performance for a streetfighter in this segment. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox and features a slip-and-assist clutch, ensuring smooth and easy gear transitions.
Thanks to its 18 kg lighter weight compared to the Dominar 400, the NS400Z’s power-to-weight ratio enhances its acceleration. It can achieve 0-60 km/h in 2.8 seconds and 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, making it quick off the line and responsive to throttle inputs. The larger 46-tooth sprocket further improves its initial acceleration, while the engine’s ability to hold high revs makes it suitable for both city commutes and spirited rides on highways.
One notable aspect is the availability of four riding modes—Road, Rain, Sport, and Off-Road—which adjust throttle response, power output, and ABS intervention depending on the selected mode. However, the vibration at both the lower and higher ends of the RPM band may reduce the bike's comfort during extended rides.
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z excels in both riding dynamics and handling. The motorcycle is equipped with a 43 mm USD front fork and a 6-step adjustable rear monoshock, ensuring a good balance between comfort and sportiness. The dual-spar perimeter frame (borrowed from the Dominar) provides stiffness and stability, contributing to excellent handling.
With a kerb weight of 174 kg and a wheelbase of 1344 mm, the NS400Z is shorter and lighter than the Dominar 400, making it more agile. Its shorter wheelbase enhances cornering ability, though the bike feels slightly twitchy when pushed aggressively through tight turns. The Michelin Pilot Street tires, while offering decent grip, could have been more performance-oriented to handle the bike’s power output.
The 320 mm front disc and 230 mm rear disc brakes, paired with dual-channel ABS, provide good stopping power, though the overall braking performance could be improved with better tire grip.
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z offers a comfortable riding experience, suitable for both daily commutes and long-distance rides. The 807 mm saddle height ensures that riders of varying heights can comfortably manage the bike. The seat itself is well-padded, though some riders might find the pillion seat a bit cramped.
The adjustable clutch and brake levers enhance rider comfort by allowing customization based on hand size. The riding posture is upright and slightly aggressive, thanks to the wide handlebars and rear-set footpegs, making the NS400Z comfortable for extended rides without causing fatigue.
The NS400Z comes equipped with modern tech features, including a fully digital Bluetooth-enabled display. The square LCD screen offers key information such as trip meters, fuel consumption, lap timer, and turn-by-turn navigation, accessible via the D-pad switch on the left handlebar. However, the design of the instrument cluster could be more visually appealing.
In terms of rider aids, the NS400Z features switchable traction control, dual-channel ABS, and the aforementioned riding modes. These features provide flexibility for different riding conditions, though the SuperMoto ABS mode would have been a welcome addition for enthusiasts.
During our tests, the Pulsar NS400Z delivered a fuel efficiency of approximately 30 kmpl in city conditions, which is commendable for a sub-400cc motorcycle. Its 12-liter fuel tank allows for a practical range of around 360 kilometers per tank, making it suitable for both city commuting and weekend rides.
Priced at ₹1.85 lakh (ex-showroom), the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z offers incredible value for money. It undercuts its main competitors, including the KTM 390 Duke, Triumph Speed 400, and BMW G 310 R, all of which are priced significantly higher. The NS400Z delivers strong performance, a host of modern features, and a practical design at a price point that makes it highly accessible to buyers in this segment.
Bajaj Auto’s extensive after-sales service network ensures that NS400Z owners have easy access to maintenance and spare parts. Bajaj is known for its affordable service costs, and the Pulsar lineup benefits from a well-established support system across India.
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z competes against the likes of the KTM 390 Duke, Triumph Speed 400, and TVS Apache RTR 310. While the KTM 390 Duke offers a more aggressive and refined riding experience, the NS400Z counters with a more affordable price and similar power figures. The Triumph Speed 400 offers a more premium feel, but at a higher price point, while the Apache RTR 310 packs similar features, making the NS400Z a more budget-friendly alternative.
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z is a compelling offering for riders seeking a powerful, feature-packed, and affordable 400cc motorcycle. While it could benefit from better tires and a slightly refined instrument cluster, the NS400Z delivers in terms of performance, handling, and overall value. For buyers looking for an entry into the 400cc segment without breaking the bank, the Pulsar NS400Z is an excellent choice

My Experiance after one and half year
By Pragnesh Jain @ Nov 15, 2024 04:10 PM
5.0
After 3000 km on my NS400, sharing my experience: Pros: Appearance: The NS400 stands out with its unique Pulsar design, though reminiscent of the NS200. It offers a muscular and stylish look. Fuel Efficiency: Achieves 35-39 kmpl on highways, maintaining decent mileage with a balanced riding style. Performance: As the most affordable 400cc bike, its power is linear and handling precise, but feels more like a high-end 250cc. Features: Offers dual ABS, ride modes, traction control, connectivity, USD forks—a comprehensive package. Comfort: Upright seating with minimal wrist pressure; stiffer suspension suited for long rides. Service & Quality: Good support from Bajaj; notable improvement in build quality compared to previous models. Cons: Vibrations: Noticeable at 4-5k rpm. Display: Lacks refinement; pixelation issues in direct sunlight. Headlight: Poor adjustment causing glare issues for oncoming traffic.

THIS IS A GAME CHANGER BIKE
By Marvan Jasen @ Nov 15, 2024 04:20 PM
5.0
it is a game changer for performance bike who want an affordable, high-displacement bike. Building on the NS series' reputation, the NS400 would likely come with a powerful engine, perhaps a derivative of the Dominar’s 373cc motor, offering strong acceleration and highway performance.

Could be better in 400 CC section
By Gopal Sethi @ Nov 15, 2024 04:14 PM
3.0
The aggressive, forward-leaning stance seen on the NS series may offer sporty handling but could prove less comfortable for long, bumper-to-bumper commutes. Price-wise, if positioned right, it could disrupt the market, but Bajaj would need to ensure build quality and service support match expectations, as riders here value reliability and hassle-free maintenance. Competing with established offerings like Royal Enfield and KTM would mean walking a tightrope between raw performance, comfort, and cost efficiency.

It comes with a few compromises
By Sagar Chanchalani @ Sep 28, 2024 02:00 PM
3.0
The Bajaj Pulsar NS400 offers great performance and looks. The engine is powerful and delivers excellent acceleration, making it ideal for highways. However, the fuel efficiency could be better, and the bike feels heavy in city traffic. The seating is decent, but longer rides may not be the most comfortable. Overall, it’s a solid choice for those looking for performance, but it comes with a few compromises.
