About Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Cars

Buying Second Hand Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

Buying a second-hand car is always the right choice if you are a new driver. It not only allows you to refine your driving skills at a lower budget but also ensures that you know more about how a car functions.

Nowadays, there are many websites that allow you to invest in second-hand cars. This also increases the number of options you have in the industry. However, surveys have shown how Maruti Suzuki cars ensure longevity and reduce after-sale costs. Further in this article, you will get to know more about the three best Maruti Suzuki Wagon R models and how to go ahead with the buying process.

Used Maruti Suzuki Wagon R by Generation

The Wagon R has been a top choice in the industry for quite some time now. However, ever since it first came out in 1999, there have been a lot of newer renditions of the car, each with its own improvements and additions. The next segment of this article talks about each of these three variants, helping you decide which one is the best choice for your needs.

First Generation (1999)

Launched in December of 1999, the first generation Wagon R was heavily inspired by its Japanese counterpart, namely the Wagon R Kel car. This was launched in India as a competitor to the then newly arrived Hyundai Santro. Given the ergonomics and low prices of this car, it quickly gained acclaim in the market. Some of the most notable features this car had, included a spacious interior with the ability to make the seat taller for passengers with ease.

The car was also one of the first to offer features like power steering and power windows. Back in the day, these features were considered to be luxuries in the Indian market. The car came with Suzuki’s 1.1-litre F10D petrol engine that could produce up to 64 bhp at 6,200 rpm, and the maximum torque was 84 Nm at 3,500 rpm. 2003 shows a newer rendition of the car, although there were no internal changes. The only notable changes in this facelift included chrome grills, clear-lens tail lamps and body-coloured bumpers on the exterior.

The interior introduced a beige dashboard along with new storage spaces. Three years later, in 2006, Suzuki introduced an LPG version of the car and named it DUO in addition to the F10D engine models. With this, the owners could choose between running their cars on petrol or LPG. The 2006 version also came with some minor aesthetic overhauls, including a redesigned tailgate and grille with chrome accents. This car was considered a success and sold about 8, 80,000 units.

Second Generation (2010)

The next big change for this car came around April 2010, featuring a completely new panel that was inspired by the fourth generation Wagon R in Japan. The wheelbase was increased to 2,400 mm, and the overall length was about 3,595 mm. This variant was also taller and wider than the earlier model. There were certain new features that were also added, including airbags, ABS and fog lamps.

That said, these features were only included in the top variant and other entry levels, including the LX, LXI and VXI. Suzuki named this variant the Wagon R 1.0 and powered it with a more efficient 998 cc three-cylinder K10B engine. You can find the same engine used in other Maruti Suzuki cars like the Estillo, A-Star and Alto K10. The engine could deliver a top torque of 90 Nm at 3,500 rpm and a maximum power of 68 PS at 6,200 rpm. The same year Maruti Suzuki also launched Stingray, which used the same 5-speed engine and the same body.

However, that only came in the top model variant, VXI and was INR 20,000 more. This made Wagon R the more common choice in the market. 2013 was the first facelift of the second generation Wagon R and came with some cosmetic changes like a slimmer grille, revamped bumper with bigger vents and new fog light housing. On the interior of the car, there were not many differences, but it included an integrated Eagle Wings music system and dual glove box.

Third Generation (2019)

Sometime around the latter part of January 2019, the third generation of the Wagon R was introduced. This shared the rather revered HEARTECT platform with the Ignis amongst other models like the Baleno, Celerio and Swift. Consequently, the car was much lighter yet more robust and sturdy.

The third generation of the Wagon R was a lot bigger, with a 35 mm increase in wheelbase and a 125 mm increase in width. This directly made the interior a lot bigger, making it the perfect 5-seater car. This generation was the first in which Maruti offered the consumers two different engine choices, namely the K10B 1.0 litre petrol or the better and more equipped K12M 1.2 litre petrol engine. While the former only offered manual transmission, the K12M came with an AMT option.

It was also able to produce a maximum power of 82 PS and 113 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the previous engine’s power was kept the same at 68 PS of power and 90 Nm of maximum torque. However, on the CNG variant, these numbers go further down as it is heavier. 2022 saw a new rendition of the third-generation model with newer K12N 1.2 and K10C 1.0 Dualjet engines and features like an idle start-stop system.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R comes in 5 new variants, starting from LXI, VXI, ZXI, ZXI+ and ZXI+ Dual Tone. While you are getting the same engine on all these variants, there are some safety features and interior design angles that are only available on the top model.
