TVS Apache RTR 160 4V Expert Review
Pros
- Refined BS6-compliant engine with improved fuel injection technology
- Sharp handling with commendable grip from TVS Remora radial tires
- Enhanced design with a new LED headlamp and race-inspired graphics
Cons
- Slight reduction in power output compared to the previous model
- Lacks the SmartXonnect Bluetooth system, which is available on other models
- 5-speed gearbox could have been slicker for better shifting experience
The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V BS6 model continues to be one of the best options in the 160cc segment, offering a refined engine and sporty handling. The updates in design and the new headlamp add to its appeal, though the slight drop in power and the absence of advanced features like SmartXonnect might leave some wanting more. Overall, it remains a solid and stylish performer in its class, offering good value for its price.
The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V BS6 is one of the best-selling models in TVS’s Apache series, combining performance, style, and advanced technology. Launched with an updated BS6-compliant engine, this motorcycle offers refined performance and improved fuel efficiency, catering to riders who seek a versatile bike for both urban commuting and weekend rides. Priced starting at ₹99,950 (ex-showroom) for the drum brake version, the RTR 160 4V sits in a competitive segment alongside the Suzuki Gixxer 155 and the Yamaha FZ-S FI. Despite its minor drop in power output, the bike retains its sporty DNA with enhanced design and features.
The design of the BS6 Apache RTR 160 4V is a key highlight, incorporating modern elements while retaining its muscular streetfighter stance. The most significant upgrade in the BS6 model is the full LED headlamp unit with claw-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs). These not only enhance visibility but also add to the motorcycle’s aggressive street presence. The sharp tank extensions and new race-inspired graphics on the fuel tank give the bike a more premium look, while the dual-tone seat adds a touch of class.
While the overall design remains largely unchanged from its predecessor, the new LED lighting system makes a noticeable difference in the bike's aesthetic appeal. The fit and finish of the materials used feel solid and premium, continuing the Apache's tradition of offering a refined and well-built product
The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V BS6 is powered by a 159.7 cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled engine, which now produces 15.8 bhp at 8250 rpm and 14.12 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm. This is a slight reduction from the BS4 model’s 16.6 bhp and 14.8 Nm of torque, but the engine's refinement has improved significantly, thanks to the race-tuned fuel injection (RT-Fi) technology. The updated engine delivers smooth power delivery across the rev range, with improved low-end and mid-range torque that makes city riding more engaging.
Acceleration feels more eager, and the engine revs freely to higher limits with less effort than the previous model. The 5-speed gearbox, while not the slickest in the segment, gets the job done, though it could have been a bit more precise. The overall performance is ideal for a 160 cc commuter bike, and despite the minor reduction in power, the bike retains its fun-to-ride character, especially in urban settings.
Handling has always been a strong suit of the Apache series, and the RTR 160 4V is no exception. The bike feels well-planted and nimble, making it an excellent companion for tight city corners as well as highway cruising. The TVS Remora tires offer excellent grip on both dry and wet surfaces, instilling confidence in the rider while leaning into corners or making quick maneuvers in traffic.
The suspension setup—telescopic forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear—is slightly on the stiffer side, which enhances stability when cornering at speed but might feel a bit harsh on rough roads. Despite this, the bike handles potholes and uneven surfaces relatively well, offering a comfortable ride quality overall.
The braking system is available in both drum and disc variants, with the top-spec model featuring a 270 mm front petal disc and 200 mm rear disc. The single-channel ABS ensures that the bike stops safely without locking up, though the braking bite could be slightly sharper for more immediate stopping power
Ergonomically, the Apache RTR 160 4V is designed to be comfortable for both short city rides and longer weekend trips. The wide, upright handlebars provide good leverage, and the footpeg position is neutral, making the riding posture comfortable for riders of varying heights. The dual-tone seat is well-padded, though the pillion seat remains small and might not be ideal for long-distance two-up riding.
The instrument cluster remains fully digital and includes all necessary information such as speed, fuel level, trip meters, and gear position indicator. However, the bike still misses out on the SmartXonnect Bluetooth system, which is available on the Apache RTR 200 4V, a feature that would have added more value for tech-savvy riders.
The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V is equipped with a full-digital LCD instrument console, providing key information such as speed, fuel gauge, odometer, trip meters, and a gear position indicator. The race-tuned fuel injection system (RT-Fi) is a new addition to the BS6 variant, improving both performance and fuel efficiency while also ensuring that the bike meets the stricter emission norms.
The LED headlamp and taillight are among the standout features in this model, improving both visibility and safety during night rides.
However, the SmartXonnect system, which allows riders to connect their smartphones to the bike’s display, is missing in this version, which could have made it more appealing in the current market.
One of the advantages of the new BS6-compliant engine is its improved fuel efficiency. The Apache RTR 160 4V is expected to deliver a mileage of around 45-50 kmpl, depending on riding conditions. This makes it a relatively economical option for city commuting, with the added bonus of being environmentally friendlier due to its reduced emissions.
With a 12-liter fuel tank, the bike can provide a range of over 500 kilometers, which is ideal for riders who prefer longer rides without frequent refueling stops.
Priced at ₹99,950 for the base drum brake version and going up to ₹1.03 lakh for the disc brake variant, the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V offers excellent value for money in the 160 cc segment.
The bike’s combination of modern design, strong performance, fuel efficiency, and comfort make it an appealing choice for both young and mature riders alike. Its price is competitive, especially when considering the features and performance it offers compared to rivals like the Suzuki Gixxer 155 and the Yamaha FZ-S FI.
TVS Motor Company is known for its extensive after-sales service network across India. Maintenance costs for the Apache RTR 160 4V are relatively low, and spare parts are readily available. With multiple service centers in urban and rural areas, owners can expect reliable after-sales support, which adds to the bike’s overall value proposition.
The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V competes with motorcycles like the Suzuki Gixxer 155, Yamaha FZ-S FI, and the Bajaj Pulsar NS160. The Suzuki Gixxer 155 is known for its refined engine and premium build quality, while the Yamaha FZ-S FI focuses on comfort and fuel efficiency. The Bajaj Pulsar NS160 offers a slightly more aggressive performance package. However, the Apache RTR 160 4V stands out with its handling prowess, sporty design, and LED headlamp, making it a well-rounded competitor in the segment
The TVS Apache RTR 160 4V remains one of the best all-rounders in the 160 cc segment. With its combination of refined performance, modern styling, and practical features, it offers something for every type of rider, whether you’re a city commuter or a weekend enthusiast. The addition of the BS6-compliant engine and improved aesthetics further elevate its appeal. While there are minor areas for improvement, such as the inclusion of the SmartXonnect system, the Apache RTR 160 4V continues to be a top contender in its class, offering exceptional value for money

Best 160CC Till Yet
By Sambhaji Shendge @ Oct 29, 2019 01:41 PM
5.0
It's a good bike for long trip and also good for daily use. I have completed more than 8000 km . And still I didn't have any complaints. riding experience is so good . No vibration. And very smooth in 5 the gear. Bike is giving me 39KMPL (It's increasing) average in 6 months in city like Pune, till 1 year I think bike will give 43-45 KMPL average. The only complaint is break is not so good. I am using double disc model. And the noise from the disc brakes is little bit irritating. Otherwise everything is perfect. I have ride this bike on 123KMPL. Best ever experience. I will suggest that get this bike. Thanks to TVS????????

Maintenance cost also normal. While riding i felt like a horse rider and its brakes is normal.

After having completed more than 15000 KM's both in city and highways, it's one of the bike best in the segment. Engine is refined and you don't feel the vibrations found in old Apache series. The throttle response is just amazing
