car&bike Expert Take

“Being the ultimate luxury car, the Rolls-Royce Phantom thinks about giving comfort and isolation over anything else. This sedan is undoubtedly quite expensive, but its value is compounded by the fact that it can deliver the highest form of grand touring luxury.”

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II debuted globally in 2022. In the Indian market, it maintained its zenith by offering the audience a bespoke platform meant for ultimate passenger relaxation. Its 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 engine has that genuinely custom-built feel that not many of its rivals can boast about.

Besides, as time passed, the British manufacturer has also kept their star vehicle relevant by adding some additional modern technology into its core fundamentals. Prices hover around Rs. 8.99 crore for the standard model, and go past Rs. 10.48 crore for the top variant before bespoke customisations add up. It's mechanically still the same vehicle, though, with its V12 engine offering 563 bhp and 900 Nm of torque, alongside its eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The car&bike team, along with Jaiveer Mehra, have kept a consistent track of Rolls-Royce producing different, special editions of this luxury sedan throughout the past five years. We have mentioned snippets from those pieces here in this review as well.

The Phantom continues to bet on the brand's legendary 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine. There are no changes to the output figures in the Series II update as well.

Driving Experience: Real World

The Phantom has always been known for its effortless torque delivery and composure from the heavy chassis. It prioritises smooth momentum over sudden acceleration, and its power delivery is linear, making it feel surprisingly lively when you prod the throttle.

City Driving

In city conditions, the V12 engine feels punchy even at low revs. The strong low-end torque means the heavy saloon can waft through traffic. The eight-speed automatic gearbox, meanwhile, has some supreme comfort to offer, so gear changes are imperceptible.

At times below 2,000 rpm, the response feels relaxed rather than urgent. However, it never jerks or hesitates. Once you get used to the sheer dimensions, it is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre.

Highway Driving

On the highway, the Phantom feels planted and incredibly steady. It cruises between 80 and 120 kmph comfortably while the engine sits barely above idle. The V12 engine remains punchy in the mid-range, and overtakes are executed with simple confidence.

The automatic gearbox cannot be rushed, but it drops a gear smoothly when you demand more speed. At higher speeds, engine noise is almost non-existent, thanks to heavy sound insulation.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom has not gone through any dramatic visual overhauls recently. Instead, the Series II update is more about minor, yet effective, improvements. The most noticeable change seen is the subtle tweak to the famous Pantheon grille, which now has a polished top bar. The headlights also benefit from some intricate, laser-cut star-like detailing.

Jaiveer notes about one of the special editions,

“The series is the ‘most complex and technologically ambitious Private Collection’ ever undertaken by it, with over 40,000 hours having been spent to develop the special edition.”

The Phantom is way longer and taller than the Flying Spur and the Maybach S-Class. Its wheelbase is also much longer at 3,552 mm, which gives class-leading rear cabin space. The massive footprint means it requires careful parking, but it grants the car an unmatched road presence.

The exterior design still puts emphasis on grand solidity rather than sporty aggression. It looks like a proper, traditional luxury motor car from every angle. While the massive saloon keeps its imposing, upright stance and flowing lines, it does not lean towards sharp creases or overly aggressive styling elements. The classic, long-bonnet and short-front-overhang proportions define its overall identity as usual.

Front Profile

  • The signature Pantheon grille is still the focal point, now slightly illuminated on the Series II models.
  • The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy sits proudly atop the tall bonnet.
  • The new laserlight headlamps feature a starlight-etched bezel.
  • The front bumper is clean, avoiding unnecessary vents or fake styling details.

Side Profile

  • The Phantom appears grand and balanced from the side, thanks to its classic two-to-one proportions.
  • The strong shoulder line keeps its solid character alive.
  • The car rides on massive 21-inch or 22-inch alloy wheels, which also have self-righting centre caps.
  • The iconic rear-hinged coach doors allow elegant entry and exit for rear passengers.

Rear Profile

  • At the back, the styling is clean and relatively simple.
  • The LED tail lamps have an elegant vertical design with subtle chrome surrounds.
  • The wide boot lid flows and ends smoothly towards the rear bumper.
  • The exhaust pipes are neatly integrated, keeping the car's tidy and formal appearance intact.

Pros

  • Incredibly quiet cabin at all speeds
  • Smooth ride quality over bad roads
  • Endless custom options
  • Strong road presence
  • The V12 engine delivers great low-end torque

Cons

  • Very difficult to park in the city
  • High fuel consumption
  • Massive price tag
  • Lacks some newer self-driving features

Verdict

The Rolls-Royce Phantom does not try to be a sporty car. It does not chase track lap times or try to dazzle you with giant touchscreens. What it does is provide a completely isolated, calm trip from one point to another. The build quality is exact, and the materials are the best you can find.

Moreover, the standard V12 engine does its job without any fuss, and the ride handles rough patches with ease. Yes, it is huge, heavy and costs a fortune. But buyers at this level are not looking for a bargain; they want the best example of a luxury saloon. If your goal is to travel in total comfort and make a clear statement, the Phantom remains the top choice. It strictly follows its own path, ignoring other passing trends in the car world.

  • Great in the US, nightmare in India
    5.0
    Base(Petrol)
The Rolls Royce Phantom is just $450,000 (INR 3.5 Cr) in the US, but in India the base starts around 11Cr, which is more then 3 times its actual cost. Just think of why would you buy something for 3 times it’s value which depreciates insanely fast when it’s just off the lot. Please do not invest in depreciating assets, especially super luxury cars in India. It is actually a liability more then an asset. If you are one of the top one percent, go for it but again, where are you going to enjoy the drive?
