After receiving much flak for cheating emission standards, Volkswagen has announced that it will soon initiate the overhaul of the 11 million cars affected by the recent scandal. Matthias Mueller, CEO, Volkswagen, explained that the company will start informing customers with tainted cars over the coming weeks and months.

The carmaker will release the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) details of affected cars to retailers. Additionally, a self-serve process for customers to check if their vehicle is affected will also be set up. This will then be followed by establishing contact with affected customers with details of a process to get their vehicles corrected in the near future.

VW clarified that all vehicles are technically safe and roadworthy in the meantime.

VW, which faces a fine to the tune of $18 billion, admitted that 11 million cars were fitted with the software that aided manipulation of emission tests. Authorities in South Korea, France, Italy, Canada, Germany, the UK, and India have also started investigations against the German carmaker after the scandal broke.

Ever since the admission of its guilt, VW saw over 1/3rd drop in its market value. This, in turn, could also have adverse affects on its home country's economy.

Though Volkswagen faces increasing pressure to devote effort to take corrective measures, analysts believe the proposes overhaul could cost VW over $6.5 billion.

While Volkswagen is yet to elucidate its plan to refit the affected cars, and how it would alter the cars' mileage and efficiency, it said it would submit the details to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), next month.

The Number of Affected Vehicles in the UK, Per Brand:

    Volkswagen Passenger Cars - 508,276

    Audi - 393,450

    SEAT - 76,773

    SKODA - 131,569

    Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles - 79,838
