  • The upcoming EQS SUV will share its features with the EQS sedan
  • The new Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is expected to make its debut next year

It was just last month that Mercedes-Benz unveiled its flagship electric vehicle, the EQS. While production for the electric sedan has already commenced, the company is also working on an SUV version of the EQS, and a prototype version of the new electric vehicle was recently spotted testing in Germany. It will be one of the 10 electric vehicles the company plans to have in its portfolio by the end of 2022, however, we expect the global deliveries to only commence in 2023. That is also when Mercedes-Benz if at all it decides to, might bring the EQS SUV to India. As for the sedan, it's expected to reach our shores by end of 2021 or early 2022.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV prototype is still wearing some temporary parts

The prototype model of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is heavily covered in camouflage, so there is not much we can talk about with regards to its design and styling. Having said that, the silhouette of the SUV shares some amount of similarities with the existing EQC, which comes with a long body with a wide footprint and a slightly sloping roof. With regards to exterior elements, it's still wearing some temporary parts, however, we do expect it to borrow some of the premium elements from its sedan counterpart.

While we do not get to see the cabin of the EQS in these images, the SUV is expected to share most of the styling elements and features with the EQS sedan. This includes the large triple screen display that encompasses the entire dashboard and is split into a digital instrument cluster and two touchscreen displays - the main central unit and one for the front passenger. Other features will include the minimalist cabin layout, three-spoke multifunctional steering wheel and of course the AI-enabled MBUX infotainment system. The SUV version of the EQS is likely to borrow the electric powertrain as well from the EQS sedan. Right now, the latter comes with a permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) and depending on the variant, the model either gets a single electric motor or dual e-motors. The EQS 450+ is the base variant that features a single electric motor on the rear axle for a total of 328 bhp and 568 Nm of peak torque. The EQS 580 4MATIC is an all-wheel-drive (AWD) range-topping trim and gets an electric motor on both front and rear axles. Total output in combination here is 516 bhp and a whopping 855 Nm of peak torque, good for a 4.1 seconds sprint to 100 kmph from a standstill.
