  • The Government has increased the duty rates on CKD models by 5%

With the government announcing a cut on completely built unit (CBU) duties and increasing the duty on completely knocked down kits (CKD) by 5 per cent, one of the worst hit premium motorcycle manufacturers was Triumph Motorcycles India. Most of its bike models are assembled in India. In fact, in accordance with 'Make in India', Triumph had announced that it wanted to locally assemble over 90 per cent of its models. But now, it has no option apart from hiking up the prices of some of its models. The most affordable model from Triumph is the Street Twin and even that gets a price hike of Rs. 40,000. The Triumph Thruxton 1200 R gets the biggest hike in prices, to the tune of Rs. 62,000. Thankfully, the Speedmaster which was launched recently had accounted for the revised duty rates and therefore, carries the launch price of Rs. 11.12 lakh. With rival manufacturers such as BMW Motorrad, Harley-Davidson and even Indian Motorcycles announcing a price cut on its CBU range, it could affect Triumph's sales in these few months.

Vimal Sumbly, managing director, Triumph Motorcycles India said- "After the budget, this is a great initiative to cut import duties on CBUs, but for CKDs where local assembly is done in India, the import duties are increased by 5 per cent and the FTA (free trade agreement) remains unchanged. We would urge the government to relook into this area."

Now you would be wondering about not seeing the Triumph Tiger 800 and Tiger Explorer in this table. This is because the company is soon going to launch the new-gen models of the Triumph Tiger 800. Keeping the prices as it is will help clear the remaining stock of the current-gen models. As far as the Tiger 1200 Explorer is concerned, the current model's price remains unaffected as it is a CBU. In fact, Triumph will also launch the new-gen model of the Tiger 1200 in India later this year. In case you are looking to buy a Tiger 800, this would be the right time to get your hands on one.
