Tesla Says It Has Made 1 Million 4680 Battery Cells
Highlights
- Tesla successfully manufactured 1 million tabless batteries
- These batteries will soon achieve mass production
- The new batteries are being made by Panasonic
Tesla has revealed that it has now made over a million 4680 battery cells at its pilot facility in California. These cells were announced in 2020 at its battery day event and the electric car maker revealed that they were the tent pole behind enhancing the range of its vehicles and reducing the cost of its vehicles. Tesla is expected to start deliveries of its Model Y with these batteries.
These new batteries have a tab-less design in a new cylindrical shell which is a much bigger format. Tesla believes six to five times the energy capacity but it will also reduce the cost of the battery significantly.
After the production in the pilot facility, these batteries will get mass manufacturing in the Berlin and Texas Gigafactories. Approximately, 1,000 cells are used per car which means 1 million batteries are just about enough for 1,000 Model Y units.
In 2022, Tesla is preparing to scale the production of the Model Y and Model 3, alongside the Model X. Tesla believes that the Model Y will overtake the Model 3 as the best selling electric car in the world.
