The first-of-a-kind initiative has been undertaken by the Tamil Nadu Government as they will set up an 'Auto City' under the automobile and auto component policy launched by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. The initiative has been launched under the theme of 'Tamil Nadu, the Partner in Automotive Sector Investment'.

The State Government said that it would form an Automotive Industrial Development Centre offering investment facilitation services to companies willing to invest in the automotive industry. A modern industrial park would be set up over a 1000-hectare space as a joint venture for domestic and global automotive and auto-component firms.

The Auto City would provide multi-modal transport, a design and technological park and common infrastructure such as effluent treatment and waste management utilities. It would also organise transport of goods to various ports on 24-hour basis for movement of consignment trucks.

Tamil Nadu currently houses six car manufacturers which include Hyundai, Renault-Nissan, BMW and Ford. In totality around 13 lakh units are manufactured/assembled here. This kind of initiative by the government would put Tamil Nadu on the global map. Around 35% of Auto components manufacturers are already in Chennai and bringing them all under one roof will solve a lot of issues faced currently by the manufacturers.
