Every rare car has a historical background that makes them unique. India has a rich and long history in the automobile industry. This industry gained pace in the 1990s, with many new cars being launched. The cars launched have different features that attract different buyers. Some of the best brands have introduced a few rare cars that have been collected by people across the country. Let us look at some rare cars that are a rare sight on Indian streets today:
Mahindra Voyager-
The Mahindra Voyager is one of the luxurious MPVs introduced in India in the year 1997. The Voyager came powered by a 2.5-litre diesel Peugeot-sourced engine. The engine power of the vehicle was 70hp. The Mahindra Voyager faced tough competition from the Maruti Suzuki Omni, a simpler and cost-effective offering back then. Back in 1997, the Voyager was offered for ₹5 lakhs, which proved to be a steep price for buyers. Thus, this car is rarely found on the road these days.
Fiat Siena-
The Fiat Siena was different from its rivals. It was introduced with maximum features in its time. This car was endorsed by Sachin Tendulkar and was a great deal for buyers with its charming design. The hatchback and sedan versions of the car were equally attractive to buyers. However, for some reason, both versions never got going in the Indian market.
HM Trekker-
Hindustan Motors is famous for its Ambassador car. The car was a big success, which forced the company to convert it into an SUV as well. The HM Trekker was powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The engine was powered with a maximum torque of 80 Nm and a peak power of 39 hp. HM also introduced a 2-litre engine with peak power and torque of 51 hp and 106 Nm respectively. But the Trekker failed to impress buyers and ultimately faded out.
Sipani Badal-
Sipani Badal was an adaption of the Reliant Robin. Many of us have spotted the original 3 wheeled car in the show, Mr Bean. The engine displacement of the Sipani Badal was 198 cc. The automobile company did not sell more than 179 units in the year 1977. But the demand gradually increased to 331 units the very next year. In the third year, the demand fell to 104 units and continued to decline every year.
Mahindra Jonga-
The Mahindra Jonga was the new version of the Patrol by Nissan. This car was originally introduced for the Indian Army. In the year 1996, the car could be purchased by civilians too. Jonga was the short form for the Jabalpur Ordnance and Gun-Carriage Assembly. The company had only manufactured 100 of these cars as the demand was low. Their production completely stopped in the year 1999. This SUV was reintroduced with the name Captain Cool in the year 2019.
Mahindra Reva-
Mahindra Reva is an electric car that was introduced in India at over ₹5 lakhs. The car offered a seating capacity of two people and was a good option for a city commute. The environment was cooler when it was introduced, which made the car less relevant in its time. There were also bigger cars being offered at the same price which became one of the reasons why Reva failed to perform well in the country.
Daewoo Nexia-
After the Cielo failed, the company tried to get back in the market with its new sedan offering. The company introduced the Nexia, but it failed to get the attention of Indian buyers. The car was offered at ₹6.22lakhs with a 1.6-litre engine. High prices and poor marketing were predominant reasons behind the car failing to take off in India.
