Overall, the Indian automobile industry is still recovering from the pandemic effect, as the total retail sales registered 14,39,747 units in January 2022 compared to 16,12,130 units from January 2021, a decline of 10.69 per cent.

Data released by European Automobile Manufacturers' Association showed that self-charging hybrid cars outsold diesel cars in Europe for the first time in 2021, albeit by just 48 vehicles.

Hero MotoCorp claims that the drop in sales is primarily due to the third Covid-19 wave along with staggered state-wise lockdowns and restricted movement, all of which impacted the overall sales volume for the last month.

Honda's domestic sales in January 20222 stood at 315,196 units while 39,013 units were exported. Exports particularly performed well with the brand witnessing a double-digit growth last month.

Ather Energy sold 2,825 units registering a year-on-year growth of 366 per cent over January 2021 numbers. The company plans to share its sales data on a monthly basis now.

The Kia Seltos contributed 77 per cent to the export volume and the remaining 23 per cent is attributed to the Kia Sonet.

In January 2022, Mahindra sold 21,162 tractors in India, a decline of 37 per cent compared to sales done in the same month last year. Exports, however, reached 1,520 units, a healthy growth of 25 per cent over January 2021.

In January 2022, Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 7,328 vehicles in India, a year-on-year decline of over 34 per cent compared to the 11,126 units sold during the same month in 2021.
