Highlights

  • The RE Continental GT 650 will be launched in India in Mid 2018
  • It shares the engine, parts and components with the Interceptor 650
  • We expect the pricing to be Rs. 4 lakh - Rs. 4.5 lakh

Along with the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 Twin, the company also gave us a glimpse of the rather good-looking Continental GT 650 Twin. This marked the first occasion that Royal Enfield showcased motorcycles with a parallel-twin engine. The Interceptor and the Continental GT 650 share the same chassis and engine, of course. But that's where the similarities end broadly. A first look at the Continental GT 650 might lead you to believe that the bike is absolutely similar to the standard Continental GT which is on sale currently. But one couldn't be more wrong! Sure, the 650 Twin is a proper café racer like the Continental GT 535, but there are a few stark differences. We list them out for you. Oh! And did we mention that the bike looks beautiful!

1. Engine

The biggest change is the engine. The Continental GT 650 Twin uses the same 648 cc parallel-twin motor as the Interceptor. The engine makes 47 bhp at 7,100 rpm and 52 Nm at 4,000 rpm and is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a slip-assist clutch. The engine gets a 270 degree firing order, which the company found to have the smoothest setup and feel. The engine is air-cooled, of course.

2. Suspension, Chassis And Brakes

The bike gets ABS as standard, which is great news actually. The bike gets a dual-cradle, tubular steel frame which was made by Harris Performance. The bike gets 41 mm telescopic suspension up front which has 110 mm of travel. At the rear, there are twin coil-over shock absorbers with 88 mm of travel. The bike weighs 198 kg (dry). Up front is a 320 mm disc while the rear tyre gets a 240 mm disc.

3. Features and equipment

Royal Enfield will be offering the Continental GT 650 with ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes). There is a retro-looking twin-pod instrumentation console which have analogue meters for measuring speed and RPMs. There is a small digital panel for showing other information as well. We will have more information closer to the launch dates.

4. Accessories

Royal Enfield will also be offering a whole lot of modular accessories for the Continental GT 650 Twin. Some of them will be a lower clip-on handlebars, twin-seat, fly-screen and so on and so forth. These accessories will be inter-changeable between the Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650.

5. Expected pricing

Royal Enfield has always priced its new models aggressively. With the company now moving to a brand new segment of motorcycles, expect the prices to be aggressive. Our guess would be around Rs. 4 lakh to Rs. 4.5 lakh. Anything below and Royal Enfield could have yet another winner on its hands.
