In a grand unveil, Roll-Royce Motor Cars has shown us the first concept car ever in its rich history as a carmaker. The Vision Next 100 points to the future of luxury mobility according to Rolls-Royce. The reason the British mark has made the aberration and shown a concept is to keep with the theme announced by its parent when it BMW celebrated its 100 year anniversary in Munich a few months ago.
Torsten Muller-Otvos, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said, “The Grand Arrival of the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 boldly points to a bright future for our marque where our patrons’ individual demands for complete and authentic personalisation will be met through an exquisite fusion of technology, design and hallmark Rolls-Royce craftsmanship.”
The concept is large, and is based on an advanced lightweight platform. It also features a high-performance electric drive that has 2 motors that have a 250kw output each. They’re placed on the front and rear axles. The car’s body almost completely conceals the wheels – almost like the BMW Vision Next 100 Years – and it almost appears the car is floating on air! That’s very apt considering Rolls-Royce prides itself on its magic-carpet-ride! The roofline is very classical while the rear is a hark back to the classic sports era. The boot is behind the front wheel! Giles Taylor, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said, “With the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 we were mindful not to dwell on the past. We wanted to be as innovative as possible and at the same time transcend the design history of the marque”.
The car was shown at a glitzy event in London. It is what Rolls-Royce calls a completely personal, effortless and autonomous Rolls-Royce experience, wrapped in a design that ensures a ‘Grand Sanctuary’ for its occupants, and a ‘Grand Arrival’.
This ‘Vision Vehicle’ is one of four announced by the BMW Group in Munich on 7 March 2016, as it launched its centenary celebrations – THE NEXT 100 YEARS. In addition to being the centenary of the BMW Group, 2016 also represents the end of production of the 7th generation Phantom. Rolls-Royce has also begun work on its first all-terrain vehicle – dubbed Project Cullinan – that also has much anticipation around it.
