Remembering The Dream Cars Of The 90's

Audi or BMW wasn't the most aspirational car for Indians back then. A majority of the youngsters during the 90s dreamed of owning a Maruti Gypsy or a Mitsubishi Lancer or an Esteem. These were cool cars with street cred – perfect for showing off to friends. At the same time, they didn't look like you sold your family home and a couple of kidneys to buy them.
Maruti 800
The Maruti 800 was the car of the era and a common sight on Indian roads for over 2 decades. It would be an understatement to say that the Maruti 800 was a bestseller.
We think all the 90s people would have their fair share of memories in Maruti 800. Though the Alto 800 led to the discontinuation of the Maruti 800, it was undoubtedly one of the best models. One of the reasons it was such a big hit was its modest pricing.

Maruti Gypsy
The Maruti Gypsy gave Mahindra cars a run for their money. Today, the vehicle might be a rare sighting, but it is still common in national safari parks and Army use. One thing that made Gypsy a show-stealer is that it runs on petrol.
Owing to its petrol engines, this car could even handle the harsh weather in Ladakh. The Gypsy comes in several forms – soft tops, hardtops, and even no tops! The torquey petrol motors and lightweight structure was a hit among the masses.

Maruti Esteem
Back in the 90s, Esteem was the ride for the riches. If you spotted a Maruti Esteem on the road, it would mean that some VIP was travelling. Moreover, the Maruti Esteem turned out to be a great race car.
Also, the petrol engines in the Esteem model are so seamless; you can barely hear any noise. Even though these cars are no more around, you can spot some rare modified versions.

Daewoo Matiz
The Matiz has dominated the class of compact hatchbacks since Daewoo launched it in the market. The unique styling made the Daewoo Matiz the bestseller of the decade. Also, Matiz was one of the first cars from Daewoo. It is worth mentioning that this car enjoyed quite a good response in the market. But, the production for Matiz stopped when Daewoo declared itself bankrupt.

Mitsubishi Lancer
Our car memories of the 90s would be incomplete without the Mitsubishi Lancer. Mitsubishi is a Japanese firm that introduced this fantastic model in the late 90s. The Mitsubishi Lancer was the perfect choice for someone looking for a combination of sports and luxury. The capable chassis impressed most car lovers with its stellar performance.
