In this day and age of modernisation and modification, we tend to forget the past. But what we do it pimp our old rides a bit and well, car manufacturers just shy away from doing anything more on their cars. Well, not any more. Land Rover might have just taken the fight to all the tuners out there who thought they have the best looking and the most powerful Defender. Not anymore. The Jaguar Land Rover Classic division which is based on the outskirts of Coventry has resurrected the Defender in a new avatar and has thoroughly reworked and rejuvenated this old car.
The resurgence of the special edition of the Defender comes as part of the 70 years celebration of the iconic off-roader, this year. Ahead of the launch of the all-new Defender, Jaguar Land Rover decided to do a limited run model which is probably the swansong of the old-generation of the Defender.
It's called the Defender Works V8 and only 150-odd units will be made. All of them will come with a 5-litre naturally aspirated V8 which pumps out 400 bhp and develops 515 Nm of peak torque. These power figures officially make it the most powerful Defender ever to hit the roads. 0-100 kmph is achieved in just 5.6 seconds while the top speed has been limited to 170 kmph.
Jaguar Land Rover Classic director Tim Hannig said, "The idea of reintroducing a V8 Defender was something we were discussing as far back as 2014, when we were still building the Defender in Solihull. We knew the demand was there for a powerful and fast Defender - the Land Rover authenticity is the ultimate finishing touch for discerning clients purchasing these collector's edition Defenders."
The Defender Works V8 gets an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with sport mode, uprated brakes and handling kit. In addition to that it gets exclusive 18-inch diamond-turned Sawtooth alloy wheels and 265/65 R18 all-terrain tyres.
There are eight colours to choose from including two satin finishes - contrasting with a Santorini Black roof, wheel arches and front grille - and finished off with machined aluminium door handles, fuel filler cap and Defender bonnet lettering. The dashboard, door panels, headlining and Recaro sports seats get full Windsor leather trim and Land Rover Classic's own Classic Infotainment System has also been fitted.
There are 90 and 110 wheelbase Defender Works V8 derivatives that will be available to purchase direct from Land Rover Classic. Land Rover says that the reworked Defender will be available for importing on an individual basis in Europe, Middle East and North Africa.
