Jeep Grand Cherokee And Wrangler Unlimited India Launch: Highlights
Jeep has officially started its India operations today at a special event with the launch of the Grand Cherokee range and the Wrangler Unlimited. As mentioned earlier, the company has been working to set up base throughout the year and will initially commence operations via two dealerships in Delhi and Ahmadabad. With the Supreme Court lifting its diesel ban, the roads are now open more than ever for the American SUV brand to thrive in the national capital. Furthermore, the company plans to have a total of 10 Jeep dealerships in the country by the end of this year with outlets scheduled to open up in Mumbai, Kochi, Pune among others.
Initially, all three models will enter India via the CBU (Completely Built-Up) route, but word around the market is that the Grand Cherokee maker is also working on plans to set up a local assembly plant for its SUVs. In fact, FCA had previously announced its plans to invest about $280 million (around Rs. 1854 crore) in the country to expand the Ranjangaon manufacturing plant near Pune for locally assembling Jeep models.
Talking about the SUVs, the Jeep vehicles will be imported as CBUs starting with the off-roading icon 'Wrangler' which will be available in the long-wheelbase Unlimited trim with power coming from a 2.8-litre diesel engine tuned for 197bhp and 460Nm of torque. The Jeep Grand Cherokee will get a 3.0-litre V6 EcoDiesel engine tuned to produce 240bhp, whilst paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission that will send power to all four wheels via the All-Wheel Drive system. Those in the want for a fast SUV will appreciate the Grand Cherokee SRT that draws power from the 6.4-litre HEMI V8 petrol engine tuned for a beastly 475bhp of power.
