How to Transfer Your Car from One State to Another?

What are some conditions that make re-registration important?
There are quite a few scenarios in which re-registration of a vehicle becomes important. Most commonly, when you take your car from one place to another with the intention of using it for over a year, you will have to register it to the new state.

The lifetime tax or road tax should be paid again. However, this time it will be lower as it is based on the depreciated value of the car. After doing this, the owner has to reimburse the road tax (already paid) from the previous residing state. This is done by submitting the new road tax receipt. With this the process is complete and the owner then has to follow the regulations of the new state.
Many car owners seek the help of middlemen for the same, as they assume the process is quite time consuming and complicated. However, with the help of this article, the re-registration process will be explained to you. You will find how you can re-register your car after the inter-state transfer process.
Procure the NOC from the Traffic department
The first step you have to go through is procuring the No Objection Certificate (NOC). In order to get that from the RTO, you will also have to submit two other NOCs which are as follows:
- An NOC from the traffic police proving that no fines are left for the car in question.
- A report from NCRB, short for National Crime Records Bureau, clarifying that the car was not stolen or involved in any accidents. However, only some states require this.
When you go to acquire the NOC from the traffic department and NCRB, make sure that these documents are in your possession:
- A letter for the Deputy Commissioner of Traffic.
- A copy of the vehicle's insurance papers, Pollution under Control certificate, and RC.
- The driving license copy.
- An address proof of the owner. This can either be your ration card, driving license or passport. Basically, any kind of ID proof.
- A clearance letter from your bank if the loan is still pending.
It is better if you carry all the original documents for the verification process. Acquiring the NOC from both the NCRB and traffic department is quite similar and happens in only a few days.
Go to the RTO with the right documents:
After you acquire the required NOCs, you will have to get the following documents:
- Form 28- this is an Application for Grant of Certificate and No Objection Certificate.
- A copy of the registration certificate.
- Documents that show the payment of road tax (for commercial vehicles only).
- Valid insurance documents.
- NOC from traffic police.
Once you have collected all of these documents, you have to submit the same to the RTO and pay the applicable fees. Once done, it will take a few days for the NOC to arrive. As soon as you get the NOC, you can request for re-registering your car in the new state.
Re-register after the transfer:
This is the next step, where you have to apply to the RTO to get your vehicle re-registered. Some of the documents you need for this include:
- The original registration certificate from the state
- Form number 20 which is required for the registration
- The NOC from the earlier RTO
- Form number 27 which is required for assigning the new registration certificate
- Form number 33 which is used to intimate the change of address
- An attested copy of the PUC certificate
- Passport size pictures
- Lending bank NOC if your vehicle is still on loan
These are the several steps you have to follow in order to get your car re-registered in a new state. However, if you are having issues with the process or do not have enough time on your hands, you can always get professional service.
