The results of the 2016 Engine of the Year have been announced and the winner is something that blew our minds away when we got a chance to experience it on the 488 GTB. Yes, it was from Ferrari and none other than the twin-turbocharged 3.9-litre V8 which comes fitted to the 488 GTB, 488 Spider, and California T. Ferrari winning the award also sees a change in the way the jury has thought about it as it's been a decade since an engine with more than six cylinders has claimed top prize.

The judges were particularly pleased with the power delivery of the engine as well as its technology. The special seals of the turbochargers help to prevent lag and this helps in using all the 660bhp which is available right upto 8000 rpm.

Then there's the ion-sensing system to control ignition timing and adaptively predict misfires which is why it can pounce from 0 to 100km/h in just 3 seconds. The engine was also the top pick in the Performance Engine, New Engine and 3.0-litre to- 4.0-litre engine categories.

Clearly, the car maker was happy and it said, ""Ferrari's return to twin-turbo technology for the V8 range has set a new benchmark for turbo-charged engines. Zero turbo lag and a progressive delivery of torque throughout the rev range maintain unprecedented levels of driver involvement."

The other winners consisted of Tesla Motors who took home the award in the Green Engine category for its electric powertrain. The Sub 1.0-litre award went to Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost inline-three engine and this is the fifth year in a row that it's won that title. Here are some more winners.

    1.0-1.4-litre: PSA Peugeot Citroen's 1.2-litre turbocharged inline-three

    1.4-1.8-litre: BMW's 1.5-litre turbocharged hybrid powertrain

    1.8-2.0-litre: Mercedes-AMG's 2.0-litre turbo-four

    2.0-2.5-litre: Audi's 2.5-litre turbo inline-five

    2.5-3.0-litre: Porsche's 3.0-litre flat-six biturbo
