F1: Ferrari Aiming To Be On Podium For The Last 6 Races Of The Season
Highlights
- The Scuderia is aiming to be on the podium for the rest of the season
- It believes that it will be particularly competitive in Mexico
- Ferrari has a deficit of just 7.5 points to McLaren
Ferrari has said that it aims to be on the podium for the remainder of the season especially after getting a substantial boost with its engine upgrade which was first deployed on Charles Leclerc's car in Russia and then on Carlos Sainz Jr's car in Turkey. Sainz was voted the driver of the day at the Turkish GP after his valiant drive from P19 to P8 which could've been even a P7 had it not been for a botched 8-second pit stop.
"I think we have to be realistic too. We got closer to the best ones, but they still remain up there and I think they remain unassailable. But this new power unit allows us to position ourselves just behind them and this is important because that means ahead of all the other ones," said Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto.
"I think we can see the podium and try to go for it every race. They are important points. We gained ten points against McLaren [in Turkey], if from now until the end we manage to consolidate this kind of result, it's very good," added Binotto highlighting the ambition of the team.
Ferrari trails McLaren by 7.5 points in the constructor's championship and had stated at the start of the season that its aim was to get back in the top three. The addition of the new hybrid engine unit also accounts for extra testing time for reliability for Ferrari as it works on a new engine concept for 2022 and some of the development, particularly, the hybrid system, will probably transfer to the 2022 power unit.
This upgrade has added 10-15 bhp of power which was witnessed in Turkey where the two Ferrari cars were amongst the fastest in straight-line speed.
