Expert Review on Ferrari Portofino

- Powerful Performance
- Premium Fit And Finish
Cons
- Lacks Rear Seat Comfort
- Less Cargo Space With The Roof Down
- Quite Expensive
The Ferrari Portofino isn't the fastest, best handling or loudest supercar out there. But for what it is meant to do i.e. look good while being drivable enough to be used every day, it is nearly perfect. The roof mechanism could be better engineered to take real life problems like dust. We still think it is the prettiest car out there today and considering the fact that it is the entry-level vehicle in the Ferrari lineup, expect it to sell like hot cakes.
In the world of automotive nomenclature, few have drawn as much attention as Ferrari. The Portofino took its name from a quaint Italian coastal village. This grand tourer replaced the California T, not by disrespecting it, but by elevating every characteristic to a sublime level. You could call the Portofino the automotive manifestation of la dolce vita, a car that seamlessly combined everyday usability with Italian panache.
Replacing the California T, the Portofino wasn’t merely an iteration; it was a revolution in design language. At the front, the car showcased a series of cleverly placed vents and air ducts. These design features played a significant role in maintaining optimal engine temperatures while ensuring downforce.
The real magic, however, was in its proportions. The elongated hood complemented the more compact rear, evoking that quintessential sports car silhouette. Unlike the California’s somewhat awkward rear-end, the Portofino perfected it. With its quad exhausts, integrated spoiler, and a rear diffuser, the back of the Portofino was a masterpiece in itself.
Inside the Portofino, you were greeted by an interior that managed to balance flamboyance and understated luxury. You’ll immediately notice the 10.25-inch high-definition touchscreen that is the command center. Ferrari kept the interior clean by integrating most controls into the steering wheel. From the turn signals to the headlamp switch, it was all ergonomically within your reach. Adding to the immersive driving experience were optional LED shift lights on the steering wheel, a nod to Ferrari’s racing DNA. The optional side screen gave the passenger a front-row seat to the car’s performance stats.
At the heart of Portofino’s safety suite was Electronic Stability Control (ESC), meticulously engineered to keep the car’s raw power in check. This intelligent system continuously monitored numerous variables like wheel speed, steering angle, and throttle position to ensure that you’re always in control, even when pushing the car to its limits. The car also received other features such as the F1-Trac traction control and E-Diff electronic differential.
Then there was the highly advanced braking system—carbon-ceramic brakes that not only provided unparalleled stopping power but were also incredibly resistant to wear and fade. Coupled with Ferrari’s own ABS system, these brakes offered an incredible amount of control.
Nestled under that sweeping hood was a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8, churning out 592 horsepower and 760 Nm of torque. Remarkably, this powerhouse suffered from zero turbo lag, offering instantaneous power delivery whenever you demanded it.
The Portofino truly shone in its ride and handling. With the driving mode set to ‘comfort’, it glided over road imperfections as effortlessly as a luxury sedan. However, dial the switch to ‘sport’, and the adjustable suspension would firm up, and the exhaust note would deepen, turning your grand tourer into an out-and-out sports car.
The Portofino was priced at about Rs 3 Crore (ex-showroom).
The Portofino’s closest competitors were the Aston Martin DB11 Volante and the Bentley Continental GT Convertible.

What's New?
The Ferrari Portofino replaces the California T to become the most affordable car you can buy from the Ferrari lineup. What is possible the most beautiful production car in the world, the Ferrari Portofino is a hard top convertible with a metal folding roof that is powered by a front mounted twin-turbo V8 engine. The Ferrari Portofino is priced in India at Rs 3.5 Crore (ex-showroom) before considering options and extras of which there are plenty to choose from. The Ferrari Portofino does not have any direct rivals in India apart from the likes of the upcoming Bentley Continental GT convertible and the luxurious Rolls Royce Dawn.
The 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, which has also won the coveted ‘engine of the year’ award for three years in a row makes 592 bhp of peak power and 760 Nm of peak torque. The Portofino gets from 0-100 kmph in just 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 320 kmph. The Ferrari Portofino also gets an electronic rear differential, quicker and updated electronic power steering and the Ferrari signature magnetorheological suspension that uses iron filings in the suspension to stiffen or soften the damping instantly at the touch of a button. The Ferrari Portofino also gets driving modes that the driver can choose from right on the steering wheel itself.
As we mentioned earlier, the Ferrari Portofino features an all new body that is absolutely stunning in terms of design. The front facia features the typical Ferrari family look as most other Ferraris get currently with the large central grille and sleek sharp LED headlamps. The profile on the new Ferrari Portofino is sharper and features an optional carbon fibre side skirt while the iconic rear wheel arch haunches are accentuated and lead into the tail lamps. The Portofino also gets a stunning rear end with its twin tail lamps that are set apart and a quad exhaust setup while the boot lid itself is a lot more contoured. The roof itself folds away in under 20 seconds and can be operated while on the move.
