Elon Musk Confirms Plans For Tesla To Open Superchargers To Other Automakers In 2021

- Elon Musk says that Tesla's supercharger network will work with other EVs
- Tesla is in the process of closing deals with third party OEMs
- Tesla will likely need to provide adaptors to non Tesla owners
Usually, all Tesla news breaks on Twitter first, thanks to Elon and it has happened yet again. After saying that Tesla was considering opening up its supercharger network to third party electric vehicles. Tesla's secret sauce has been its supercharger network which includes 25,000 superchargers across the world. Now on Twitter, Musk revealed that by the end of the year, its supercharger network will be open to third parties. Tesla has been working towards this for a while. Superchargers enable the rapid charging capability that Tesla's cars have at 250 kWh and there are plans to upgrade this system to 300 kWh. Tesla has been rumoured for the longest time to be closing deals with third-party EV makers. It had even committed to the Norwegian government that it was going to be opening up its network to third parties.

The Tesla founder had earlier even said that low key automakers were using superchargers already
Overall Tesla has over 2,700 stations. Musk even revealed that when Tesla designs the supercharger network, there was no industry standard for charging so it went ahead and created its own thing. Then the industry responded and there was fragmentation in the charging connector.
"We created our own connector, as there was no standard back then and Tesla was the only maker of long-range electric cars. It's one fairly slim connector for both low & high power charging. That said, we're making our Supercharger network open to other EVs later this year," tweeted.

Tesla's Model 3 is the world's best selling executive sedan
In North America, Tesla uses its own connector but it will likely offer an adaptor to owners of non-Tesla electric vehicles. In Europe, this will be easier as Tesla uses the CCS standard which is used by many automakers.
Tesla wants to encourage the adoption of EVs which will enable its rivals to get access to subsidies that will accelerate the use of electric vehicles. Since Tesla is the largest player for EVs, it will be a win for it as well.
