BMW has unveiled what it calls an advanced prototype of the HP4 Race at the EICMA show in Milan, with carbon fibre twin-spar frame and wheels. Based on the S 1000 RR, BMW plans to make the HP4 Race a production model, with an expected launch date sometime in late 2017.

"It was initially left open as to how far the advanced prototype reflected what the final motorcycle would look like," BMW said. "It is also certain that the BMW HP4 Race will be manufactured by hand in an exclusive limited series and supplied in the second half of 2017."

Apart from that, BMW hasn't disclosed any other details about the bike. Clearly, a limited edition model with carbon fibre frame, wheels and bodywork, the production model will be pitted squarely against another carbon fibre-made superbike, the Ducati 1299 Superleggera, which was also unveiled at the EICMA 2016.

Where the BMW is different is that while the Ducati gets a full carbon fibre swingarm, the BMW's swingarm is finished in lightweight aluminium. Being a limited edition production superbike, expect the HP4 to be priced in the 'expensive' bracket.
