Highlights

  • Edouard Lathhe, MD, Ducati Western Europe, confirmed the same
  • Ducati's current priority is to make Euro V compliant engines
  • There will be no small-capacity mass market bike from Ducati though

Ducati! The name and the brand is one of the most respected, in the global motorcycling community and over the years, Ducati has given some iconic and some super-fast motorcycles to the world. But in the last couple of years and more importantly, over the next few years, the automotive world will witness a paradigm shift in terms of engine technology. This means that more and more manufacturers are dedicating more resources towards electric vehicles. This includes two-wheeler manufacturers as well. And therefore, Ducati too has said that it will be bringing in electric two-wheelers and possibly scooters as well. But all these will be coming in only by 2021.

The managing director of Ducati Western Europe, Edouard Latthe spoke to a French automotive website called 'Moto-Station' and confirmed that Ducati will be working on electric two-wheelers and scooters in its model portfolio by 2021. But the current priority is meeting the Euro V emission norms which will be enforced from 2020. Having said that, we are not sure how to react to a Ducati scooter, if and when it comes!

The balance of power is currently shifting from internal combustion engines to electric motors and it is only better if traditional motorcycle makers such as Ducati understand the scenario and work accordingly. But whenever, the big, roaring IC engines from Ducati do go out of fashion, there are no words that could describe our sadness about the same. Other two-wheeler manufacturers too are slowly figuring out the same and working out a plan for electric-two wheelers. While the sound of these electric bikes may be non-existent, the power and thrill could definitely match that of these premium bikes. We certainly hope so.
