The DeLorean Is Coming 'Back to the Future'
Highlights
- Delorean is 'Journey to electrification'
- Italdesign to design this version too
- Launch expected later this year
Italdesign, the company that designed the original DeLorean, has teased an upcoming DeLorean revival on their 54th anniversary. While much isn't known about the EV, DeLorean says that they plan on launching the car later this year. The DeLorean Motor Company was founded by Brit Stephen Wynne in 1995, and they have since offered repairs and rebuilds of the original DeLoreans. They have also made multiple attempts to revive the icon from the movie "Back to the Future", but it hasn't really come to fruition until now.
The teaser video shows the Gullwing doors of the upcoming sports car opening, as an animated graphic highlights a 'V' shaped insert in its front grille.
The founder of Italdesign, Giorgetto Giugiaro, loved designing sharp & squared off cars, and he also applied this design philosophy to cars like VW Scirocco, Lotus Espirit, & the Maserati Bora. This car's silhouette however, looks a bit curvy, and suggests that it will be a tamed down rendition of the original design. While the original design is still famous to this day, the DeLorean wasn't a successful product back in its day and its production only occurred in 1981 & 82. We hope that isn't the case this time around.
The owners of DeLorean tried to revive the icon earlier too, when they hand-built a few units in 2007, and also assembled as many as 300 units in 2017 using original parts.
The DeLorean website says that it's taking a 'Journey to electrification', implying that the powertrain of this car will surely be electric. However, not much else is disclosed about the powertrain.
