Elon Musk has said that he wanted to sell Tesla to Apple in 2016 for around $60 billion but Cook never took a meeting. Tim Cook on the other hand claimed that he never spoke to Musk who is now the 2nd richest man in the world. Cook as far as to say, " You know, I've never spoken to Elon, although I have great admiration and respect for the company he's built."
But now details are emerging that Cook actually called Musk to acquire Tesla. In an upcoming book called Power Play: Tesla, Elon Musk and the Bet of the Century written by Wall Street Journal reporter Tim Higgins, Cook actually called Musk ahead of the unveiling of the Model 3.
At the time Tesla was struggling financially. Musk was even interested in the idea but he insisted that he become the CEO of Apple post the acquisition which would've been the biggest company Apple would've acquired in its history.
Initially, Cook thought that Musk wanted to continue being CEO of Tesla and he said he wasn't opposed to the idea but then Musk revealed he meant becoming the CEO of Apple, and Cook responded with an expletive. And that's when things fell through.
It should be noted that this information is to be taken with a grain of salt as carandbike hasn't read the book and this report is based of a review of the book in the Los Angeles Times. It should also be noted that this information is in complete contradiction to what both Cook and Musk have said publicly.
