  • BMW R 1300 GS to replace current BMW R 1250 GS
  • New GS to feature liquid-cooled engine, new suspension and frame
  • Production model likely to be introduced next year

BMW Motorrad looks set to update its flagship adventure touring motorcycle, the BMW R 1250 GS. Latest reports show images of the next-generation model of the bike undergoing test runs, and from the looks of it, the new BMW R 1300 GS is seen with current R 1250 GS bikes, possibly to make side-by-side testing of BMW Motorrad's full-size ADV. The test bike is heavily camouflaged and disguised, with plastic shrouds covering the nose cone, fuel tank and side panels. What can be seen is the general silhouette and shape of the new bike.

The BMW R 1300 GS is likely to get a new liquid-cooled engine

The new bike, to be called the BMW R 1300 GS, looks more compact and smaller than the current BMW R 1250 GS. But what it's likely to get is an all-new boxer engine, mounted on a brand new frame, and even new bodywork. On the design front, the area around the headlight seems to have been heavily revised, and forming part of the distinctive beak. One more significant change is that the new engine will feature twin radiators, so unlike earlier and the current model boxer twin, the upcoming bike will feature liquid-cooling, and the engine is likely to get a displacement bump closer to 1,300 cc from the current 1,254 cc.

The test mule of the BMW R 1300 GS seems to be undergoing side-by-side tests with the current R 1250 GS

On one of the spy shots, we can see boxed sections on either side of the bike jutting out behind the plastic shrouds. The frame is expected to be updated as well, and so is the suspension. The test bike seems to be equipped with an updated fork, instead of the telelever suspension that does duty on the current model. The exhaust system is also new, with a smaller silencer and the catalytic converter will likely be positioned below the bike. So, the next-generation 'GS' could get a bigger engine, but radically updated from the ground up. We expect more news over the next few months, and a close to production model towards the end of the year about the updated BMW R 1300 GS.
