All-New Tata Punch Micro SUV Revealed; Launch This Festive Season

Tata Motors has officially revealed its upcoming micro SUV, which was codenamed HBX, and it will be called - the Tata Punch. First unveiled as the H2X Concept at the Geneva Motor Show, we got to see the car in India at the 2020 Auto Expo. The new Tata Punch will be the first SUV to be built on the ALFA-ARC (Agile Light Flexible Advanced Architecture), and it employs the Impact 2.0 design language. It's the new entry-level SUV in the company's line-up and will be positioned below the Nexon subcompact SUV in India, however it is not a replacement for the Tiago. The new Tata Punch micro SUV will be launched in India during this festive season.

Unveiling the new Tata Punch, Shailesh Chandra - President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors said - "Tata Punch, as the name suggest is an energetic vehicle with a capability to go anywhere. Light on its feet and strong in its caliber, this is a vehicle which truly punches above its weight. With the perfect combination of stunning design, technology and driving dynamics, the Punch will come equipped with superlative features and an architecture that has proven its versatility in all forms. True to the SUV genes of all Tata Motors' products and catering to the needs of customers who are looking for a compact city car with pure SUV characteristics, Punch will be the fourth addition to our SUV family, widening the range of options for all to choose from."
Visually, the new Tata Punch looks like the baby Safari, with its aggressive front end that features Tata's signature split lighting design. The black panel the houses the Tata logo also features a three tri-arrow pattern, flanked by the LED daytime time running lamps, while the main headlamp units are positioned below, which will come with projector lights. Most of the front section is heavily cladded and features a large tri-arrow design grille and large round foglamps.

The cladding continues along the profile as well, covering the squared wheel arches and side underbody. The car also comes with sporty dual-tone alloy wheels and roof rails, while the revealed model comes in a dual-tone paint job, featuring a blue base tone with a white roof and blacked-out pillars. Tata has not revealed the rear section of the car but based on the teaser and leaked photos, we know it will come with compact wraparound LED taillamps, a sculpted tailgate and a heavily cladded bumper.
The specifications have not been revealed, however, we expect the new Punch to come with the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, which also powers the Altorz premium hatchback. The petrol mill is tuned to make 85 bhp and 113 Nm of power figures. It is likely to come with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard and an optional AMT unit. Upon launch, the new Tata Punch will compete with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, and possibly even the Renault Kwid.
