Mercedes-Benz has been working on the 2019 version of the AMG-G63 for more than 2 years now, and the effort seems to have paid off as the company has finally revealed the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 ahead of its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show. For 2019, Mercedes-AMG has upgraded the G63 with a more powerful drive system, newly developed AMG Ride Control suspension, AMG-specific transmission modes and the new interior with widescreen cockpit. While the wings, bonnet and doors are made of aluminum, it has shed close to 400 kgs from the previous generation, but the company maintains that it will not lose out on its off-roading credentials.

"The new AMG G 63 brings driving performance to the segment of unadulterated off-road vehicles in unexpected form. It was important for us to tie in with the original character on account of the cult status the G 63 enjoys with our customers and fans. The vehicle has nevertheless reached a completely new dimension in terms of technology with the 4.0-litre V8 Bi-Turbo engine as well as in combination with the off-road characteristics, the agility and the vehicle dynamics achieved," explains Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

In terms of design, there isn't much to differentiate between the recently unveiled G63 and the AMG G63. Up front, the AMG G63 gets AMG-specific radiator grille and AMG bumper with large side air inlets and trim in matt iridium silver. The headlamps, indicators and tail lights are in LED High Performance technology, which come as standard. The multi-beam LED headlamps are optionally though. Other characteristics of G 63 include flared front and rear wheel arches, which create space for the larger, wider wheels. Red brake calipers, perforated brake discs and 22-inch wheels available for the first time, while the twin tailpipes come with high-gloss chrome.

On the inside, the Mercedes-AMG G63 gets completely redesigned dashboard and has analogue tubes as dial instruments. The two 12.3-inch displays visually blend into a single unit beneath a shared glass cover. Moreover, the shape of round headlamps is reflected in the side air vents, and that of the indicators in the tweeters on the dashboard. The AMG Performance steering wheel comes covered in Nappa leather, while the shift paddles are galvanized.

The new AMG G63 performs even better when off-road thanks to the AMG ride control suspension, which has been completely redesigned by Mercedes-AMG and features coil springs all-round. The front axle has an independent, double wishbone suspension, while a rigid axle with a five-link suspension is used at the rear. This arrangement ensures good drivability both on and off the road and the additional transverse stabilisers at the front and rear axles helps to reduce body roll.

Under the hood, the previous 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo engine is replaced with AMG power of 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine that produces 580 bhp of max power and 850 NM of peak torque and comes mated to the extremely fast-shifting 9-Speed automatic transmission. It absolves a sprint from 0-100kmph in just 4.5 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 220kmph or 240kmph with the AMG Driver's package. Mercedes-AMG also gives the option to choose from five drive modes- Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual, and three off-road modes- Sand, Trail and Rock. All the driving modes can be toggled from the instrument cluster and in the central media display.
