The Mahindra Thar Roxx has set a new safety benchmark by becoming the first ladder-frame passenger vehicle to achieve a five-star rating in Bharat NCAP crash tests. The Thar Roxx’s outstanding performance reinforces Mahindra’s commitment to safety and engineering excellence, as it achieved a five-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection. This accolade places it alongside the Mahindra XUV 3XO and the all-electric XUV 400, both of which also secured five-star ratings in the latest round of Bharat NCAP tests, solidifying Mahindra's leadership in producing safe and robust vehicles.

Groundbreaking Safety Achievement

The Thar Roxx's achievement as the first body-on-frame passenger vehicle to earn five stars in Bharat NCAP crash tests is significant. While it narrowly missed out on the highest score for adult occupant protection, it came extremely close to surpassing the Tata Punch EV. Notably, it did manage to match the Punch EV’s score for child occupant protection, making it a joint record holder in that category. This accomplishment is a testament to Mahindra’s focus on ensuring top-tier safety for all occupants, regardless of the vehicle’s structure.

Adult Occupant Protection Scores

The Mahindra Thar Roxx scored 31.09 out of a possible 32 points for adult occupant protection, making it one of the highest-rated vehicles in this category. The frontal offset crash test revealed strong protection for both the driver’s and front passenger’s head and neck. The driver’s chest protection was rated as adequate, while the front passenger’s chest received a good rating. Additionally, both the driver’s and passenger’s knees were well-protected, and the tibias and feet of the driver showed adequate protection during the crash.

The Thar Roxx’s structural integrity was further demonstrated through its performance in side impact tests. In the side deformable barrier impact test and the side pole impact test, the SUV scored a full 16 out of 16 points, offering excellent protection for front seat occupants. This strong performance across various impact scenarios highlights the SUV's robust design, which prioritizes occupant safety during both frontal and lateral collisions.

Child Occupant Protection Scores

For child occupant protection, the Thar Roxx achieved an impressive 45 out of 49 points, resulting in a five-star rating. The crash tests included evaluating child seats for a 3-year-old dummy, which was installed rearward-facing using ISOFIX anchorages. This configuration successfully minimized forward movement during frontal impacts and provided strong protection in side impact tests. The SUV earned 24 out of 24 points for dynamic performance and 12 out of 12 points for child restraint system (CRS) installation, demonstrating Mahindra's focus on protecting its youngest passengers. The only area where the Thar Roxx lost points was in the vehicle assessment score, where it scored 9 out of 13 points.

Mahindra’s Reaction and Commitment to Safety

R Velusamy, President of Automotive Technology and Product Development at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., expressed pride in the safety achievements of the Thar Roxx, XUV 3XO, and XUV 400, stating, “The 5-star Bharat-NCAP ratings reaffirm our mission to create world-class SUVs that offer both outstanding performance and unmatched safety. From pioneering the introduction of six airbags in 2011 to now leading the charge with multiple 5-star-rated vehicles, we continue to set new benchmarks for safety across all segments.” This statement underscores Mahindra’s dedication to consistently raising the bar for safety in the automotive industry.

Comprehensive Safety Features

The Mahindra Thar Roxx comes equipped with an impressive array of safety features, ensuring a secure driving experience for all occupants. Standard safety features include six airbags, three-point seatbelts for all passengers, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and a seatbelt reminder system. For higher variants, Mahindra offers Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which include autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. These technologies enhance both active and passive safety, providing an additional layer of protection on the road.

Production and Demand Insights

The Thar Roxx has quickly gained popularity, with waiting periods currently stretching from nine to 15 months, depending on the variant. Mahindra has reported over 1.76 lakh bookings for the Thar Roxx since opening the order books. In response to the high demand, the company aims to increase production capacity for both the 3-door and 5-door Thar models to over 11,000 units per month by 2025.

Conclusion

The Mahindra Thar Roxx’s five-star performance in the Bharat NCAP crash tests reaffirms its status as a leader in safety within the SUV market. Its impressive scores for both adult and child occupant protection, combined with a comprehensive suite of safety features, make it a standout choice for safety-conscious consumers. With a focus on innovation, robust engineering, and advanced safety technologies, Mahindra continues to redefine safety standards, ensuring that every drive in the Thar Roxx is as secure as it is thrilling.
